Around the Region
When the Jenkins County War Eagles and the Screven County Gamecocks meet at Roy
Head Stadium on Friday night, the game will mark the halfway point of the season. Also,
teams will only have 1-2 games left playing non-region opponents. The opening kick to a
new season seems to take forever to arrive, but when it arrives it is gone in the blink of an
eye.
Screven County faced off against Portal this past week. In a close game, Screven County
recovered a fumble with 4 minutes to play and scored a touchdown followed by a PAT to
win the game 22-21. ECI got their first win of the season by a score of 10-7 over Dublin.
ECI was able to break a 7-7 tie in the 3 rd quarter with 8 minutes to go on a 39 yard
field goal. McIntosh County Academy traveled to West Nassau in Florida and won 18-0.
And rounding out the region, Montgomery County lost their third straight game, losing to
Wheeler County 40-14.
The War Eagles remained ranked in the top 10 once again this week. They are #3 by GPB
Sports and are #8 in the composite rankings which combines all the polls that rank GHSA
teams. McIntosh County Academy remains the only other Region 3 opponent of the War
Eagles as they are ranked #6 also by GPB, they are #9 in the composite rankings.
The War Eagles will face off against Portal on Friday night at 7:30 PM, the game will be
played at Roy Head Stadium.
Rain, Rain Go Away
The Jenkins County Lady War Eagle softball has had a great start to the 2023 softball
season. They have a record of 7-4 winning games over some very good opponents. They are
down to the last 10 games of the season. For the past two weeks, the Lady War Eagles have
tried to get their regional portion of the schedule underway. However, rain has disrupted
the schedule. The Lady War Eagles will finally get to play a home game against regional
opponent Montgomery County on Monday (09/11), and ECI on Thursday (09/14). The
Portal game that was rained out in the previous week will now be made up in a doubleheader
on Thursday, September 21 st.
Before the rain-shortened week set in, the Lady War Eagles were able to play a second
matchup against Wheeler County. In the previous week, they defeated Wheeler 6-3.
Unfortunately, the same results would not come again in this matchup. Wheeler County
defeated the Lady War Eagles 11-7 in this matchup.
The second inning started at 0-0 as neither team could get anything really going on
offense. However, as the top of the second started, Wheeler County started putting up the
hits and the runs. They quickly put up seven runs on the board.
The Lady War Eagles were able to get across two runs in the second. The defense for the
Lady War Eagles would hold Wheeler County only one more mn through the fourth and the
offense cut the lead to two runs and as the sixth inning started the score was 8-6 in favor of
Wheeler County. However, the War Eagles could not get the offense going strong again and
Wheeler County won the game 11-7.
Offensively for the Lady War Eagles, Lohgan Walker led the way with 2 hits and scored
twice in the game.

College Football Week 2 provided easily picked games and one game that resulted in a big upset
in the minds of many. Alabama was defeated at the hands of Texas Longhorns. The final score
was Texas 34 and Alabama 24. The total number of points, which was the tiebreaker was 58.
This week, we will add in 1 NFL Game! We had a huge number of submissions for the Jenkins
County Times!
The Week 2 winner of the Pigskin Pick’em was Ernest Lanier. Ernest guessed every game
correctly and he guessed even guessed the tie-breaker score to be 58! Last week, I made a
mistake and announced Jackson Gray as the winner. He and Ernest Lanier were veiy close. I
apologize for the scoring error and both are entered into the drawing.
The Week 3 Tiebreaker is: The score for the Falcons Vs. Packers and Western Kentucky
vs. Ohio State games.
