Baked trout, green
beans almondine, and
green salad with oil and
vinegar dressing. That
was the menu the first
time I cooked dinner for
our family of seven. I
don’t know exactly how
old I was, but I wasn’t
yet in high school.
Mom didn’t help with
the actual cooking,
though I think showed
her the recipe. Mom
was volunteering at the
hospital as a Grey Lady
at the time and didn’t
make it home in time to
cook. Each of us girls
were responsible to cook
dinner one night a week
to help.
It seems that I
remember that my sisters
did the same thing every
week. My older sister
made roast beef and
mashed potatoes and
the younger sister made
Mac-n-cheese. Those
were their favorite
meals, and they felt that
once they had learned
to cook one meal, they
were good. But I made
something different
every week. There were
plenty of failures, but no
one ever refused to eat
what I cooked.
This all came to mind
last week when I was
trying to make up a
menu and grocery list for
the week. I have spent
years learning to cook a
wide variety of cuisines,
Italian, Southern,
British, Chinese... Well,
not the whole cuisine,
but a dish or two of each
kind. But now it seems
that I can’t eat anything I
know how to cook.
No sugar: there goes
all the muffins, cakes,
pies and cookies I used to
bake. No wheat; no more
pasta dishes; no Chicken
Alfredo, Spaghetti and
Meatballs, or Lasagna.
No milk means no ice
cream, pudding, yoghurt,
sour cream, or cheese.
I’m not starving. There
are plenty of vegetables,
fruits, and proteins to eat.
But ‘grill this, steam that
and toss a salad’ does not
seem like ‘real’ cooking.
Given enough practice
I guess this new (to
me) way of eating will
become real and normal.
And except for all the
chopping of vegetables
it entails, it is easier than
the ‘main dish, two side
dishes, bread and salad’
meals I grew up with. It
certainly doesn’t dirty as
many dishes. I usually
have the kitchen cleaned
before I plate the food.
Someday soon, I’m
going to have to extend
that cleaning to my
shelves of cookbooks.
But right now, purging
my cookbooks would be
too emotional. So many
happy memories are
tied to cooking for my
family.

The annual fall bird
migration has begun. A
reminder: Please turn
off your outside lights
between 12:00 midnight
and 6:00 AM, August
15-November 15. And
be sure to pull your
shades and curtains to
prevent light spilling
out the windows of your
home. Most birds fly
their migration routes at
night. It’s cooler, there
is less air turbulence,
and finishing their
flight in the morning
gives them time to
forage and rest through
the day. Nighttime
lights disorient the
birds causing them to
leave their migration
pathways. Leaving their
routes can cause the
birds to starve or become
exhausted from having
to fly too long. Flipping
a light switch is a pretty
easy way to help save
our birds.
