The Tigers have Been Declawed
The Jenkins County
football team recently
played against Screven
County, where they
dominated the Gamecocks
without leaving a single
feather behind. They then
traveled to Claxton to face
the Tigers, and just like the
previous week, they were
in top fomi and quickly
dismantled their opponents.
At the end of the game, the
War Eagles had won 50-14.
At the end of the non-region
portion of the schedule, the
War Eagles have outscored
their opponents 245-87.
The War Eagles took
control of the game from
the very beginning. After
receiving the kickoff, the
War Eagles took over on
offense. Tyrone Martin had
a long opening mn, that
would be followed by a War
Eagle touchdown. With
just three minutes taken
off of the clock, the War
Eagles scored their first
touchdown, setting the tone
for the rest of the game. By
the end of the first quarter,
they had already put up
an impressive 13 points,
followed by another 13
points in the first minute of
the second quarter. As the
teams headed to the locker
room at halftime, the War
Eagles had declawed the
Tigers, leading 38-0. The
second half saw more of
the same, with the War
Eagles continuing to
dominate on both sides of
the ball. Despite a mnning
clock/ they managed to
score an additional 12
points, finishing the game
with a resounding victory
RobTravious Coney and
Tyrone Martin led the
charge for the War Eagles
offense, with Coney
rushing for 101 yards
and a touchdown on 11
carries and Martin adding
95 yards on just 4 carries.
In total, the War Eagles
racked up an impressive
417 yards. But the defense
was equally impressive,
holding the Tigers to a
stunning negative forty
yards rushing and limiting
Claxton to just 104 yards
of total offense. Overall,
it was a dominating
performance by the War
Eagles on both sides of the
ball.
This week, the War
Eagles will be given a
much-needed rest. After
playing 8 straight games (2
scrimmages and 6 regular
season games) they have
earned the week off. When
they return to action, they
will be going against
McIntosh County Academy
who has been a tough
opponent the last several
years for the War Eagles.
Last season the War Eagles
lost in 4 overtimes to the
Buccaneers, and they will
look to avenge that loss on
their home field.
The War Eagles
Defensive Coordinator,
Jason Boynton, recently
posted a challenge on
Facebook for the upcoming
game on October 6th.
He urged fans to pack
the stadium and fill it to
capacity, but the exact
number of attendees is
still uncertain. The game
will also coincide with
Homecoming for the War
Eagles. Lets show our
support and make this a
memorable event for the
team. The game will begin
at 7:30, be there early and
make plenty of noise.
After week 6 of the
regular season, the War
Eagles remain ranked in
the top 10, as they hold
their 8 th spot!

Meet the Coach: Kolbie Motes
Kolbie Motes is new to the
Jenkins County Lady War
Eagles softball coaching
staff. She is an assistant
coach alongside Callie
Dailey and Head Coach
Renee Heam. While she is
new to Jenkins County, the
Lady War Eagles have had
to face her over the years
as she played for region
rival the Portal Panthers.
She started all four years
of her high school varsity
career. While there she was
a four-time 1 st team all
region selection. Region
3A Defensive Player of the
Year for two consecutive
seasons, and 2 nd team
all-state her senior year.
She is a 2020 graduate of
Portal and often jokes with
people that she has her PhD,
“Portal High Diploma.”
Thursday night. Coach
Motes had a new experience.
In the other dugout was her
former team, the Portal
Panthers. Even more than
just her former team in the
other dugout, Kolbie’s dad
is the head coach. Travis
Motes, who has coached
for more than 18 years,
was also Kolbie’s coach for
all four years of her high
school career. When asked
what it was like coaching
against his daughter,
Travis commented, “It is
awesome to stand across
from her. It is a house
divided right now but she
knows I will always be
there for her if she needs
me. She continues to amaze
me with everything she has
accomplished. She has had
some amazing coaches in
her time as a player and
now she is able to put that
together and make it her
own.”
On Thursday night, when
the two teams squared
off for a doubleheader,
Kolbie’s War Eagles came
out on top in both games.
Kolbie knows that her
competitiveness reaches a
new level when they play
against each other, yet she
describes being opposite
of her dad as an awesome
experience. She
did warn her
mom, who is a
die-hard Panther
fan that if the War
Eagles started
winning, she just
could not run over
to the winning
side. Her mom
is the mediator
in the family
between the two
when they coach
against each other,
without a doubt
the competitive
nature of both
comes out strong.
One highlight
of her time
playing for her
dad was having
her teammates
while at Portal
call him, “Coach
Daddy.” After the
War Eagles’ big
wins on Thursday,
there is little
doubt that “Coach
Daddy” will be
receiving a hard time from
his daughter.
Kolbie is passionate about
softball. When asked about
her desire to coach, she
replied, “It has brought me
some of my greatest joys
but also my biggest defeats.
The life lessons and
friendships that I have
made over the years are
unmeasurable. I want to
give girls the same
experiences that I had
through our amazing
sport. Nothing compares
to the excitement that I
feel when the girls make
a play or get a hit. I love
hearing the girls talk each
other up and get pumped
as a team when something
great happens. Being a
new coach this year I knew
that I would need to build
relationships with the girls
before they would buy into
what I was telling them. I
am extremely grateful for
them welcoming me with
open arms and trusting that
I want what’s best for them
and the team.”
Kolbie is currently a
senior at Georgia Southern
University seeking to
obtain her degree in
Special Education. This is
her second coaching job.
Before arriving at Jenkins
County, she coached the
ECI middle school team
and assisted the varsity
team. She has also spent
time coaching travel
softball.
