The Buccaneers Have Been Sunk
All Bark, But No Bite This Time
The McIntosh County Academy (MCA)
Buccaneers sailed into the unfriendly
waters of Roy Head Stadium on Friday
night for the first regional matchup. Last
season the teams fought to the bitter end,
with McIntosh County Academy winning
in four overtimes. This time, the War Eagles
fired the first shot, and the Buccaneers were
sunk in the end.
At the onset of the game, it appeared
these two teams would have another fight
to the end. MCA began the game on the
12-yard line. After a short gain, ZZ Wilson
had a tackle for a loss and Tyler Williams
had a sack causing MCA to punt. The
running back combo of Tyrone Martin and
RobTravious Coney had two big mns, but
MCA forced a turnover on downs at the 23-
yard line.
MCA was once again held to a 3 and
out on their next possession. When the
War Eagles got the ball this time. Coney
broke free for a 5 5-yard touchdown mn.
As the second quarter began and the War
Eagles were on defense, the defense came
in strong once again. Sacks and losses
became the theme for the MCA offense
as the War Eagle defense kept applying
pressure. Once the War Eagles got the ball
back, it was RobTravious Coney in for
another touchdown and the War Eagles had
a 12-0 lead.
One of the game’s biggest plays would
come on the next possession by the War
Eagles. MCA attempted a long pass, and
what looked like a SportsCenter Top 10, ZZ
Wilson intercepted the pass. TyTy Williams
would then catch a long pass, but the War
Eagles were not able to score again in the
half and the halftime score was 12-0 in
favor of the War Eagles.
At halftime, Jenkins County named its new
Homecoming Queen. Ashiana Lovett was
named the 2023 War Eagle Homecoming
Queen. The War Eagles would then waste
no time in making sure that they fired the
last shots at the Buccaneers and finally sank
them completely. The War Eagles would
then score 37 points and not allow a single
point for the Buccaneers.
In the end, the War Eagles only allowed
the Buccaneers 64 total yards and 4 first
downs. RobTravious Coney rushed for
140 yards and three touchdowns; Christian
Wilson ran for 97 yards and 1 touchdown.
The final score was War Eagles 47 and the
Buccaneers 0.
The War Eagles will have a week off this
week before playing the last three games of
the season. October 20 th , the War Eagles
will travel to Montgomery County, October
27 th , they will host ECI, and finally on
November 3rd they will travel to Portal for
the last game of the season. The War Eagles
are now 7-0 and ranked 7th in the state
based on Georgia High School Football
Daily. This start for the War Eagles is the
best in Jenkins County History. There was
a team in 1955 who finished 9-1.
Regional Update
This past week, the softball regular season started winding down to an end as teams now
have a better picture of who is in and who is out of the state playoffs. The only game that
remains will be Portal and McIntosh County Academy in Region 3. This game will decide
the 4 th place in the region and the final spot from Region 3 heading to the playoffs.
The Lady War Eagles finished in a tie with ECI, as both were 7-1 in regional play.
However, in the head-to-head matchup with ECI and Jenkins County, ECI edged out the
War Eagles with a greater margin of victory. In game 1 of the season ECI won 5-1, the War
Eagles took the second matchup 6-5. The mn differential in favor of ECI was 4; therefore,
they get the regional crown and the number 1 seed in the playoffs from Region 3.
In football action, regional play has begun across the state of Georgia. The War Eagles
defeated McIntosh County Academy in blowout fashion, winning 47-0. Portal defeated
Montgomery County 51-23. This week on Friday night. Portal will battle ECI. ECI is 3-3

Tuesday, the Lady War Eagles faced the
much anticipated and much talked about
home game against the ECI Bulldogs. In
an earlier matchup this season, ECI won
the game 5-1. Looking back through the
history of this matchup, ECI has dominated
this matchup every year for the past 15-
plus years.
The game was a back-and-forth affair,
with ECI taking the early lead with a mn
scored in the top of the 1st. However, with
bases loaded for the War Eagles, Mya
Abraham stepped up and hit a base-clearing
double off the fence to regain the lead at
3 -1. Abraham had a stellar game in both the
field and batting. She was 2 for 4 on the
game with 4 RBIs and 1 mn scored.
ECI would then respond in the top of the
second with three mns off a home mn over
the fence. With ECI leading 4-3 into the
bottom of the 3rd , Mya Abraham got the
bats going again with a single that would
score Laura Gayle Dailey from 2nd base.
Then, Hillary Garvin laid down a bunt,
with Shanya Lake on 2 nd that would score
the go-ahead mn. The War Eagles would
end the inning leading 5-4.
The score would remain tied all the way
into the top of the 6th and ECI would get
another mn to tie the game at 5-5. The War
Eagles nor the Bulldogs could get anything
across in the 7th and that would force extra
innings. In the top of the 7th , the Bulldogs
did have bases loaded and two outs.
However, the batter would hit the ball in
the vicinity of Abraham, and like a vacuum,
she took care of the ball and through the
girl out at first.
Starting the 8th inning. Coach Heam
made a pitching change. Lynnsey Lane had
pitched an
exceptional game, throwing 119 pitches
over 7 innings. Lane had 4 strikeouts and
allowed 4
earned mns in those 7 innings. Once she
was taken out, senior Katie Lynn Bell took
over at the mound. The top of the 8th saw
the Bulldogs go down quickly.
The bottom of the 8th is when the
excitement set in. Mya Abraham got hit by a
pitch after just 1 pitch to her. Abraham then
advanced to second on smart base mnning.
The next batter was Lohgan Walker who
flew out, and she was followed up by
Hillary Garvin who stmck out. Lynnsey
Lane laid down a bunt and reached on an
error by the second baseman, and Abraham
moved to 3rd . Then it was Dehaje Newton
who came in clutch for the game. With the
count at 1-1 she drove a hard grounder into
the outfield allowing for the walk-off hit.
In addition to the victory over the ECI
Bulldogs last week, the Lady War Eagles
defeated Jefferson County 13-5 on Monday,
and a big win over regional opponent
McIntosh County
Academy 8-0. The Lady War Eagles now
have a 16-5 overall record and 7-1 in
regional play. The Lady War Eagles have
added two games to the schedule this week
during fall break.
On Monday, October 16th , the Lady War
Eagles will travel to Wilcox County for the
first round of the GHSA Superregional. At
Wilcox County, there will be 4 teams in
the superregional. The Lady War Eagles
will take on the number three seed from
Region 2. At this time, it appears the War
Eagles will take on Clinch County. Wilcox
County will play Pataula Charter Academy.
The winners of those two games will face
each other, and the losers will play each
other. The format is double elimination.
(Tournament opponents are subject to
change, location will not change) The
Super regional winner will then move on
to GHSA State playoffs Elite 8! As always,
the Jenkins County Times will have up-to-
date information as it is made available.
