Georgia to take new applications for housing subsidy vouchers in 149 counties Special to The Times ATLANTA (AP) — Georgians in 149 counties can soon apply for housing subsidies for the first time since 2021. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs announced last week that it would take online applications for its Housing Choice Voucher program beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 17 and continuing through 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 20. The program, formerly known as Section 8, provides money to low-income families to rent an apartment or house. To be eligible, a family’s income must be 50% or less of the median income in the area where the family chooses to live. A voucher pays an amount based on what rent costs in an area, family size and family income. Once a family gets a voucher, funding will continue as long as the family complies with program rules. After the state approves applicants as eligible, it will use a lottery to randomly rank the order in which applicants will receive assistance. Spokesperson Kristen Moses said the state is seeking to enroll 5,000 applicants. The current waiting list has fallen to 728 individuals. Moses said the Department of Community Affairs anticipates placing those people in coming months. The agency placed 633 applicants in the 2021-2022 budget year. The list had been closed since 2021 because of the high number of people already waiting. Moses said people without internet access can call the agency at 1-855-924-8446 to seek help, or get help at a local public library. The Farm Wife at Two Pennies Farm A Butterfly and Its Caterpillar Nancy Baker I had a few spare minutes and a set of clippers handy so I decided to trim a few water sprouts from our lemon tree. Water sprouts are those shoots, generally at the base of a tree trunk or along a horizontal branch that grow straight up. I like the trunks and branches of our fruit trees to be clean so it’s easier to pick the fruit without getting snagged. because it would transform into a beautiful butterfly. And down in Florida citrus growers classify the butterfly and it’s caterpillar as pests to be gotten rid of. I have read that a large infestation of caterpillars can defoliate a citrus tree. I know that would ruin the year’s crop from that tree, but does it actually hurt the tree? And how many trees in an orchard would be defoliated? So I’m snipping away trying to make clean cuts, and I notice a huge glop of bird droppings on a leaf. Glad I missed grabbing that leaf with my bare hand. Oh wait, did that just move? Why, yes it did. I look closer. Is this....? Viewing the droppings with my Google lens says yes, this is a Bird Dropping Caterpillar. I had heard of these before, but never seen any. Further Googling divulges that this is the caterpillar of the Giant Swallowtail Butterfly. We always have a wealth of Giant Swallowtails on our lantana hedge outside the kitchen window, but I never even wondered about what are their host plant(s) or what the caterpillars and chrysalis look like. I propped the clipping up on the lemon tree, with a prayer that the caterpillar would choose to pupate close by and I could keep an eye on it through the winter. Theoretically it could metamorphoses before winter, but I think not this late in the year. All this butterfly and caterpillar research had me laughing a bit. Here I was stunned to leam that citrus trees are the host plants for the Giant Swallowtail Butterfly and I’m valuing the Bird Dropping Caterpillar I hate that this beautiful butterfly and its ugly caterpillar are exterminated in agricultural settings and valued only in personal gardens. Planting butterfly gardens and host plants around our homes is hardly going to counteract the damage done by agricultural pesticides. But we should still do our best to plant native flowers and plants that will attract and feed butterflies. Another thing we could try to boost populations is ‘farming’butterflies. It’s not hard or expensive. There is a wealth of information on the internet. Most folks start by combing over native host plants for eggs and taking them home. They feed the caterpillars till they pupate. The chrysalis is protected till the butterflies hatch, and then the butterflies are protected for a few hours till they are strong enough to fly. People even now will let their cats and dogs have a litter so their kids can watch the miracle of birth. There are already more kittens and puppies than there are homes for them. We should nomialize raising butterflies so that kids can see the miracle of birth and these insect populations can get a boost. Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me By Sam Eades, Publisher/Writer for The Times This past week I was the moderator of a debate. Now, debates are not something I regularly attend or watch. Most of the time, those doing the debating are usually combative and loud. This one was a little different. There seemed to be a few mis-truths and innuednos (a constant torrent of gossip, lies or half-truths) spoken. Along with this, most that mn for any office have to deal with this type gossip on a daily basis. You know the kind of person, someone who is usually lonely or just plain out, cannot help themselves. They want to be "special" and 'liked" so bad, that they gossip to make themselves look better. I have you know, that gossiping does not make you look better, it makes you look like a bafoon. It is important to remember that gossiping can be harmful and hurtful to others. Recently I saw a Church bulletin that listed the sermon topic for the morning as “Gossip.” Immediately following was the hymn, “I Love to Tell the Story.” While that hymn concerns telling the story of the gospel, all too often God’s people love to tell someone else’s story. I think that, along with pride, gossip is the most widely tolerated and most destructive sin in the church. We tolerate gossip because we’ve all been guilty of it. It’s easy to condemn people for sins you’ve never committed, but it’s not so easy to face up to sin which you have done and have encouraged others to do, by listening to their gossip. So we tend to shrug it off. Or we spiritualize it: “I just wanted you to know so that you could pray.” Or my favorite, "don't tell them I told you, but...". We need to own up to gossip as a serious sin that can destroy people and relationships. It is always better to speak kindly and truthfully about others, and avoid spreading rumors or negative information. My Grandmother always said, "why would you want to spread anything that would be harmful to any person God created?" Proverbs 16:28 says, “Aperverse person stirs up conflict, and gossip separates close friends.” And at the same time. Proverbs 20:19 says, “Gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much.” Do you know that particular person? I do. I know a few. And I don't like being around those type people. As the above scripture reminds us, we should not. One of my favorite verses says, “Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.” James 1:26. Today, we look at the hymn, "Let there be peace on earth". Let There Be Peace on Earth is a song written by Jill Jackson-Miller and Sy Miller in 1955. The song was inspired by Jill's personal quest for peace after a troubled childhood. The song was first sung by a group of teenagers of different races and religions who had gathered for a workshop. The song was intended to promote friendship and understanding among young and old. To "let it begin with me." Miller stated, “When I attempted suicide back in 1944 and I didn’t succeed, I knew for the first time unconditional love which God is." You are totally loved, totally accepted, just the way you are. She continued, "In that moment I was not allowed to die, and something happened to me, which is very difficult to explain. I had an eternal moment of truth, in which I knew I was loved, and I knew I was here for a purpose, to love people and be a friend that anyone could depend on to show peace and love." May we all say, "Lord, if I gossip or talk about others, help me to show love and promote peace, by letting it begin with me." Jill Jackson Miller & Sy Miller Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me; let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be. With God our creator, family all are we.
