jenkinscountytimes.com The Jenkins County Times Wednesday, October 18, 2023- Page 11 The Ogeechee River and the rice trade While investigating the Ogeechee in the past few months, I stumbled across a place called, "The Ogeechee River Mill. " This mill is located in Hancock County (Warrenton, Ga.) and was built in 1872. This beautiful water powered mill is still operational and mostly unchanged. The original mill, built in 1872 was relcocated and built on the site across the river after flooding damaged the original structure in 1932. The mill still operates, however I am not sure what days of the week it is in operation. It was not running the day of my recent visit. I knew a man that was bom in Warrenton, Ga. And he would play at the old mill as a child with his childhood friend and country artist, Brenda Lee. "She was just "one of the boys" at that time", he stated. Of course now, she was a well known country singer. Her records are still played today on some country radio stations world wide. He said, "at one time, the old mill would ran on a daily basis and the surrounding area was very busy with horse and buggy or old tracks picking up their share of com meal. As you can see in the picture, the dam that operates the mill has been reconstructed and provides fresh ground com meal and hush puppy mix for the surrounding areas. I have to say, the dam is a beautiful sight to see. As you look, you will see the river both above and below the mill. The inside still has a trove of grinding stones and pully's, along with storage bins for goods. I suggest that you take a day trip to the town of Warrenton and visit this historic place of interest. It's located at 262 Reynolds Road, Warrenton, Georgia 30828. You will be glad you did!
