Don't Let Go I was recently over at a friend's house and I was helping him clean out some things that belonged to his late son. He had lost him tragically in a car accident some months before and he felt he was ready to move on. As we sorted through the model airplanes and model cars, I came across an old photograph of him and his son dressed up in their best fishing gear. As I held up the photo, tears started to well up in his eyes. He went on to describe the day the photo was taken to me. His vivid memories brought his son's memory to life as he described how they loved to fish together. I could see his son standing there on that dock beside their jon boat as my friend went on with the tail. He took his wallet from his back jeans pocket and slid the precious picture down between its folds. He said, "I'll never let go of this one, thank you for helping me find it." Something about holding the photograph gave him a sense of peace as it brought back fond memories of him and his child together. He later told me that holding on to that picture helped him to somehow "hold on in life." I heard about a festive day in a small Colorado town in which hot air balloon enthusiasts had gathered for a day of fun. The weather was not ideal as wind gusts were sweeping through the field where they had gathered. Many smaller balloons had been launched as they began to inflate the main attraction, a hot air balloon of epic proportions. Its sheer size dwarfed the balloons around it as it puffed and grew, needing twelve men on ropes to keep it from lifting off the ground. The owner proudly posed for some snapshots by the press and enthusiasts alike, when suddenly, tragedy struck. A sudden strong gust of wind blew through the arena catching the gargantuan balloon, ripping it from the hands of nearly all the men who held it back. All of them turned loose of the ropes except for one. He held his rope so tightly that he was pulled up into the sky right along with the monstrosity, far from the ground below and far from any hope of rescue. The onlooking crowd screamed and watched with horror, expecting the worst, fearing that at any moment the man would tire, and subsequently lose his grip on the rope. To their amazement, the man held on. He kept holding on for hours as the balloon slowly began to lose altitude. Emergency personnel chased the balloon on its flight and met it right where it came to rest. They raced to the man's rescue only to find him standing there next to the carcass of the deflated beast. They were all amazed at the man's strength and detemiination. They asked, "how did you hold on so long?" He simply replied, "I took hold of the ropes around me See CLAYTON page 6 TAKE AWAY r EXCITING WORSHIP ^ Help visitors find you! Now imagine that you and I are going up in a small plane to skydive together. We’ve both packed our parachutes and are minutes away from jumping out the door when I take off my parachute and pull out an umbrella instead. You look at me incredulously and ask, “Why did you take off your parachute and pull out an umbrella?” and I respond, “I believe with every fiber of my being that this umbrella can carry me safely to the ground.” What would happen if I jumped out of a plane with an umbrella instead of a parachute? It doesn't matter how much faith I might have in the umbrella, what I needed was a parachute. The principle is this - it doesn’t matter how much faith I have; what matters is the object that I place my faith in. The parachute was the right object to put my faith in, while the umbrella was the wrong object. People all over the world exercise faith every day. We have faith that when we turn the key or push the starter button in our car that it will crank up and carry us where we need to go. We have faith that our paycheck will be in the mail or in our bank account on payday. We have faith that when we order something from Amazon it will be delivered directly to our house within the time promised. We have faith that our iPhone charger is going to charge our phone to 100% while we sleep. We have faith that when we go to sleep, we are going to wake up the next morning. Then there is another kind of faith, faith in spiritual or religious things. Some people have placed their faith in Buddha, Mohammed, or Joseph Smith. Some people have placed their faith in science, yoga, nature, or even themselves. It doesn't matter how strong their faith is in any of those people or things, all of those are the wrong object of faith. Jesus told a religious man named Nicodemus in John 3, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” Jesus is referring to an event that happened after the Exodus, found in the book of Numbers. The people of Israel had been grumbling against God and complaining against Him, so God sent poisonous snakes among them to turn their hearts back to Him. As these snakes began biting the people of Israel and they began to get sick and die, they cried out to God to save them! God told Moses to make an image of one of the snakes and put it atop a pole, then carry the pole throughout the camp. Moses told the people of Israel that God said whoever looked up at the snake on the pole would be healed. All the people had to do was look at the snake and God would heal them. The Israelites who looked at the snake were healed, and the ones who didn’t perish. How were the people of Israel healed? God healed them when they exercised their faith in God’s command by looking at the snake. Jesus said that He would be lifted just like the snake in the wilderness - and He was when He was crucified on a Roman cross. Jesus also said that whoever believes in Him would have eternal life. How do we receive eternal life? By looking at Jesus raised up on the cross and exercising our faith in Him. Jesus is the One that our faith must be placed in to receive eternal life. It doesn't matter how strong or great your faith is if it's in the wrong object. There is only Object that is worthy of your faith, and that is Jesus. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Annual Millen Lions Club Pancake Supper Returns for 2023 Tickets Available Now.
