Cinnamon Roll Casserole
As most of you know, I am now the new Production
Director for The Pal Theatre in Millen. While preparing for
several shows recently in the old Theatre, I have experienced
several things and also found out some great history about
our beloved Theatre.
History tells us that the Pal Theatre, which was a chain
of movie theatres that opened back in the late thirties and
forties, has alot of great history. More than history, the pal
has its own visitors sometimes. You can sometimes hear
the voices of past singers echoing in the wings of the stage.
However, it is always uplifting and enjoyable.
The Millen Pal Theatre opened in 1940 with a seating at
over 450. This included the balcony which seated African
Americans at the time of the opening.
This beautiful Theatre was built in the Modem art style.
Throughout the forties, fifties and sixties, the Theatre would
show movies from the old style of two steam heated movie
projectors with fairly large reels.
Many area patrons would frequent the old Theatre and
watch some of the old movies from stars like Clark Gable
and Anita Haywood and more.
It is said that several stars would ride the train to Jenkins
County and sing or act on the small stage occasionally. It
is also said that. President Harry Truman paid a visit to the
Theatre.
The Theatre closed in the mid to late sixties and stayed
closed until it was revived and renovated by the Jenkins
County Developmental Authority and finished in 2007 with
a new marquee installed where the old one was. The current
marquee is the one that was installed on this date and
now needs some work, but is still in fair shape. After the
renovation of the old Theatre, it was named The Olde Pal
Theatre and Civic Center. It housed a few plays, singings
and concerts at that time.
Now, the old girl still remains and is called The Historic
Pal Theatre. Talks are in the works to remodel it again, but
this time giving it an overall new look. Larger staging,
dressing rooms, a VIP Lounge in the balcony and more
seating, with added side balconies, new seats and carpeting
through out. And not to mention, new paint. (Lord! that
orange wall!)
The new shows are really going well. The next presentation
will be the nationally acclaimed movie "The Help" on the
stage. After that, a presentation of "Peter Pan, The Musical"
featuring kids and adults from all over the area will adorn
the stage of the new Historic Pal Theatre.
The theatre is now on the National registry of Historic
Places in Georgia and is able to receive grants from different
sources.
I will say for one, I am very exctied to what the Historic
Pal has instore in the future and I hope generations to come
will enjoy the shows, movies and concerts that will be held
at this Historic place.
Shown here are The Jenkins County Players in front of the
Historic Pal Theatre.
New shows are coming soon and will be held on a regular
basis as the Theatre will go through a new renovation.
