jenkinscountytimes.com The Jenkins County Times Wednesday, November 8, 2023 - Page 3 A Seed From The Sower -Michael Guido Who better to write of God than “the man of God?” Not only was Psalm 90 written by Moses, but beneath the number of the Psalm and before the verses are the words: “A Prayer of Moses the Man of God.” What a powerful description of a Statesman and a servant-leader of God. Moses was not only God’s lawgiver and leader, but was chosen by God to bring the Hebrews out of Egypt, mold them into a nation for His service and lead them to within reach of the land He promised them. There are marvelous statements made about Moses in Hebrews: He refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter and put himself at great risk. He chose to share the oppression of God’s people when he could have lived a life of sin and worldly pleasure. He decided to suffer for the sake of the Lord rather than own the treasures of Egypt as he looked to his future with his King. He left the land of Egypt unafraid of the king’s anger and wrath and never looked back because he kept his eyes on God who he knew would never leave or forsake him. In a bold move of leadership he commanded the people of Israel to keep the Passover and sprinkle blood on their doorposts so that the angel of death would not kill their firstborn sons. What gave him his vision, his focus, his strength and his courage? What enabled him to look beyond the fleeting moments of pleasures in a palace to an eternity with God? Where did his wisdom and insight, patience and discipline come from? Why did he refuse worldly wealth and power? Because of his faith in the God who is everlasting. Is it not the one who reclines at -table? But I am among you as the one who serves. ’’ In ancient Rome, when a slave was purchased at the slave auction, their master would give them a new name. Their given name and identity were gone; they were only slaves now. Slaves had no identity, no past, no future, no rights, no wants, only their duty to their master today. Additionally, slave names often indicated their status, job, or hierarchy in the household. Two examples from scripture would be Onesimus in Philemon, which means “useful,” and Secondus in Acts 20:4, which means “second.” Roman antiquity tells us that many slaves were named “Primus,” which indicated that they were the chief slave in the household. In Galatians 6:10, Paul writes this about the church, “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Jesus' Church is a “household of faith” with servants or slaves. In the context of a “household of faith,” in Galatians 6:2-3, Paul says that we should do two things as a family: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.” Basically, Paul is telling us to love and serve one another. Paul didn’t come up with this teaching on his own. First, Paul is writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, "knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit" (2 Peter 1:20-21). God Himself is the Author of all scripture, from the first verse of Genesis to the last word of Revelation, for “all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). Second, this scripture in Galatians echoes the very heart of Jesus. Jesus taught with His words and ratified with His life the example of becoming a slave. In Luke 22:27, Jesus told His disciples, “For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.” In Mark 10:45, He said, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Jesus’s heart was to be Primus! He is the greatest example of Primus that exists in the history of the world. Paul uses Jesus as the prime example of being a slave in the household of God in Philippians 2:5-8, “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being bom in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” The key phrase in that passage is, “he humbled himself.” What does it take to become a slave in God’s household, to see others as greater than yourself, to love others greater than you love yourself, and to serve them? Humbling yourself. I want to be Primus in the “household of faith”. Why? Because Jesus was, and if I am going to be like Him, I must become a slave to all. Jesus said, “I am among you as one who serves.” When we are serving others, Jesus is clearly seen and among us. How can you serve others today? Pray and ask God to make you a humble servant, and then look for small opportunities today to “consider others greater than yourself.” 'exciting worship' Oak Hill Baptist Church 3233 Oak Hill Church Rd, Millen, GA 30442 Download Oak Hill Church APP Today! ^ Joshua Johnson, Senior Pastor v
