The month of November, for me, is a
month where the reality sets in that fall is
here. The leaves begin changing colors and
then fall off trees. The temperature begins
to drop. There is usually a good frost in
the first couple of weeks. My family loves
spending time outdoors hunting, and this
is the time of year when we can do that.
I also love Georgia Bulldog football, and
I know this time of year is when I can
spend Saturdays between the hedges in the
greatest college town in America, cheering
on the Dawgs.
November is also the month that
everybody thinks about Thanksgiving,
which is a special holiday celebrated
in the United States and Canada. It is
usually observed on the fourth Thursday
in November in the U.S. and on the
second Monday in October in Canada.
Thanksgiving is a time when people
come together to express gratitude for the
blessings in their lives. Other countries
may recognize the holiday, but it is more
due to the fact of American influence rather
than being specifically celebrated.
One of the most well-known traditions of
Thanksgiving is the large feast that families
and friends enjoy together. The centerpiece
of this meal is often a roasted turkey, along
with a variety of side dishes like mashed
potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and
pumpkin pie. Many people also take the
opportunity to volunteer or donate to those
in need during Thanksgiving. It's a time for
giving back and helping others, whether
through food drives, serving meals at
shelters, or other acts of kindness.
If you have never taken the opportunity
to give of your time, talent, and treasure
during the Thanksgiving season, I want
to strongly encourage you to do that this
year. About five years ago, I started a new
tradition at Thanksgiving. I spend the
entire week on a medical mission trip in the
country of El Salvador. I will say it’s hard
on a personal note because I usually go
without any of my family. They accompany
me during the summer, but at Thanksgiving,
they stay home. While there, the team I am
with goes to a different area each day to
offer medical, dental, and vision services as
well as to hand out clothing items. We visit
schools and law enforcement academies
and go into towns and villages.
This time, for me, helps to re-energize
personally. For one, I get to unplug. During
the day, I have no service on my phone, so
for 12-14 hours a day, I am not connected to
the outside world. That is very freeing, and
if you have never taken the time to “unplug”
from the digital world, I would encourage
you to do so. I am also re-energized because
of the simple act of giving back. So often,
we become busy to the point that all we can
do is make it to our next commitment. This
Thanksgiving, I would like to encourage
everyone to look for ways that you can give
back to others. I would also encourage you
to look for ways that you can do that as a
family. Serving others is truly one of the
greatest blessings in life.

I want y ’ all to know that I ain’t never done
Halloween like I do it these days. Growing
up on a farm, we never had trick or treaters
and in the 1970’s our parents were so afraid
of the mysterious man putting razor blades
in apples, like how could anybody do that,
that we didn’t do much halloween. Oh, and
our mothers had to go through every piece
of candy in our bags. Now, somehow, every
Reese cup managed to be placed in the bad
pile, but Mama never disposed of them,
unless they were saved for later!
Anyway, between working at the
carnivals in Sylvania and Millen, we were
busy, and I was over the candy give aways.
However, seeing the children enjoying
themselves was a treat. Of course, Sam
decided no kid liked mounds candy bars
so at the middle school carnival he started
giving out double hand fulls. Y’all, 60 lbs
of candy was gone in a matter of minutes.
For kids that did not like mounds, y’all they
toted bags of them out of that gym.
Sam was like the little, short woman on
Poltergeist, “y’all come get the candy, all
are welcome, all are welcome!” Now, how
many of you pictured that woman inviting
Carol Ann and friends to come to the light?
The costume contest in Jenkins County
Times was great fun and congratulations
to Rowan Davis for portraying a weather
forecaster. He wins the $50 gift certificate
to the Clubhouse in Statesboro. In the
Sylvania Times, we did not have any
submissions so we will keep that gift
certificate until the next contest.
As we start to prepare for Thanksgiving,
let us reminisce over family meals shared
around tables full of loved ones. Let us
not lose sight of what tmly matters, love.
That’s all for now, take care!
