The Jenkins County Times

Rather than tie the game up,
the Bobcats tried for a two-
point conversion and were
successful. The Bobcats
held on in the final minute
and celebrated with a 22-21
win.
In the 2022 matchup,
the War Eagles were the
number two seed and
Dooly County came in as
the three seed. This year,
the War Eagles are the
two seed again, but Dooly
County is the one seed.
On paper, the teams look
very similar. The rosters
look almost very similar
over the past two seasons.
When it comes to the
number of points scored by
the offense, the War Eagles
have scored 429 points
over 11 games, Dooly
County has scored 290 in
the same number of games.
The War Eagles have only
allowed 155 points while
Dooly has given up 295
points. The teams have
one common opponent this
season, and that is Treutlen
County. Dooly County
defeated Treutlen by a final
score of 26-12. Jenkins
County, in the first game of
the season, hosted Treutlen
and won by a huge margin
41-13.
Polls, statistics, and
common opponents are
ways to compare seasons.
Those factors can help
sports fanatics and writers
make predictions for
the game that is ahead.
However, predictions
are only worth the paper
they are written on. The
outcome is not decided on
paper, as that would surely
be boring. The outcome
will be determined in the
forty-eight minutes on the
field. With this matchup,
fans should expect to see
fast offenses, hard-hitting
defenses, and big plays on
both sides of the ball.
The game will take place
at Dooly County High
School located in Vienna,
GA. Any information
related to Friday night’s
game will be posted on
the Jenkins County Times
Facebookpage. In addition,
you can listen to the
game on 106.5 FM out of
Statesboro. Remember, do
not buy into any Facebook
post claiming that it is
broadcasting the game on
Friday night in which it
asks for
your credit
card or
personal
information. There are
numerous scam sights
that are posted on many
Facebook pages claiming
to show the game,
including on the Jenkins
County Times page. We
will inform you of any live
coverage that is available.
Check with us at the
Jenkins County Times if
you have any questions.
A Season to Remember
The Jenkins County War
Eagles have had a season
that coaches, players, and
fans will remember for
years to come. For the
current players, these are
the days they will tell
their kids and grandkids
about when they return
to Roy Head Stadium
for homecoming and
other functions at Jenkins
County. They will tell of
wins over Screven County,
ECI, McIntosh County, and
the last-second win over
Johnson County. Thirty
years from now they might
still despise going to Portal,
even if their children
or grandchildren attend
school there and play for
the Panthers.
When Head Coach
Charley Waters returned to
the helm of the War Eagles,
they were coming off a
season where they were
3-7 and missed going to the
playoffs. In his first season
back, they were 7-3 during
the season, were runner-up
in the region, and hosted
the playoffs for the first
time since 2017. They lost
narrowly to Dooly County
at home in the first round
of playoffs allowing them
to finish with a season
record of 7-4.
The excitement heading
into the 2023 season was
extremely high. The 2023
War Eagles are now 10-
1, they have won the
most games in school
history after their win
over Charlton County on
Friday night in the first
round of playoffs they are
moving on to the second
round for the first time
since 2017. Principal
Rob Gray commented on
remembering days when
the team
would only
get a single
win in the
season and
talked about
how special this team is.
He was quick to credit the
coaching staff and the great
players for their hard work
all season long in getting
them to where they are.
Charley Waters was
recently interviewed by
News 54 out of Augusta,
the second time this
season that Coach Waters
and the War Eagles have
been featured on a local
or statewide news station.
Earlier in the season the
War Eagles and Waters
were presented an award
for Team of the Week
from Georgia High School
Football Daily after they
defeated Johnson County
and War Eagles Dominate
Over the Indians entered
the top-10 rankings for
the first time since 1999.
When asked about his team
by Georgia High School
Football Dailey, Coach
Waters said the following,
“We’re a team that plays
really hard. We’re going to
play until the end. We try to
have good sportsmanship
all the time.” Those words
from Waters have remained
all season long and typified
this team.
Waters, in every interview
with media sources and
other conversations,
remains humble about this
season. He places credit to
his hard-working players
and staff. The players have
bought into what their
coaches have taught them
all season, and anyone
can observe that these War
Eagles would run through
a wall for their coaches and
for each other. They have a
“never give up
attitude,” and as a result
will go down as one of
the greatest teams in War
Eagle history. Now, the
War Eagles take it one day
at a time, one practice at
a time, and one game at a
time. They know that from
this time forward they are
one bad day away from
the season having a period
on it. For now, there is a
comma and while there is
a comma the historic run
continues!

We are now moving to week 12! Paul Williams was the winner of Week 11. He missed only one
and was closest on the tie-breaker. Interesting fact about last week. South Carolina St., a FCS
team, has local ties on their roster. Jordan Franklin, who graduated at Burke County, but attended
Jenkins County through middle school is on their roster! Have fun picking this week!
