jenkinscountytimes.com The Jenkins County Times Wednesday, November 15, 2023 - Page 3 A Seed From The Sower -Michael Guido Goethe is recognized as one of the greatest German politicians and authors. Having keen insight into the life and future ofhis nation he wrote, “The destiny of our nation can be determined by the opinions of our youth!” Few would disagree with his observation. The statesmen of our nation say the same: “The future lies with our youth.” If that is true, and it is, we must admit that “the future of our youth lies with us!” And since that is true, and it is, we must ask ourselves, “What are we doing to prepare our youth to lead our nation?” Will they know the God of the Prophets and the Christ of the Apostles and disciples of the early church? Will they learn and follow and lead with the “faith that was once delivered to the saints?” Or will they surrender their lives to the attractions of materialism and self-centeredness? Recent studies reveal that 60% of our youth will no longer attend church when then turn twenty. And even though some churches have vibrant youth programs, they are having no long lasting influence on their lives. Few make a lifelong commitment to Christ, to serving Him. It seems obvious that we are entertaining but not educating. What needs to be done? Moses, once again, provides insight and advice: “May Your deeds be shown to Your servants, Your splendor to their children.” The fact of the matter is that His deeds and splendor can only be seen in our lives. If our faith does not work for us, “why” they will ask, “should we believe in Your God?” Visit us at: SowerMinistries.org PS 220 A MAN WHO LOVES THIS CITY!! » A MAN WHO LOVES THIS COUNTRY! 4 A MAN WHO LOVES HIS FAMILY! Words of Encouragement By Joshua Johnson, Special Contributor for The Times Pastor Oak Hill Baptist Church, Millen “Buried Treasure” Who doesn’t love a good story about buried treasure? From Robinson Crusoe’s “Treasure Island”, to stories of Blackbeard the pirate, to Netflix’s popular show “Outer Banks”, we love stories about buried treasure. I think there is something that appeals to us about the adventure, mystery, and thrill of a treasure hunt, along with the chase to be the one to discover the treasure, and the changed life that it could bring. Did you know that the bible has a story in it about buried treasure? The kingdom of heaven is like treasure, buried in a field, that a man “ - 44:13 Matthewfound and reburied. Then in his joy he goes and sells everything he has and buys that .’’field I picture a farmer plowing in a field, going about his everyday life, working to eat and make a living. Then the plow gets stuck on something. He stops to look at what it is - and he’s shocked to see that he has unearthed the greatest treasure he’s ever seen or heard of in his life! How do we know that this treasure is so great? Because he covers it back up (so no one else will find it) and he goes and liquidates all of his assets, he sells everything he owns, to go and buy the field and gain that treasure. Everything he sells is far less than the value of the treasure in the field. The bible gives us one further example to illustrate the value of this treasure: Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine “ -46 -45:13 Matthewpearls. When he found one priceless pearl, he went and sold everything he had and bought it.” In the second story, a pearl merchant finds a pearl unlike any he’s ever seen before, a “priceless pearl”. This merchant has spent his life trading in pearls, and he happens upon one unlike any he has ever seen - so he sold everything he owned to purchase it. Talk about a steal of a deal! He traded everything of his that he could be a price tag on, for a treasure that was priceless. So why does the bible give us these two stories of buried treasure and the priceless pearl? These are illustrations to help us understand the kingdom of heaven. Put simply, the kingdom of heaven refers to being in a right relationship with God. The only way to have a right relationship with God is by trusting in Jesus as your savior. Jesus is the buried treasure in the field, worth selling for to gain Him. Jesus is the priceless pearl that is worth selling all the other pearls to have. Is Jesus your treasure? Is He worth giving everything else up for?
