2023 Class A Division 2 Region 3 Offensive Player of the Year!

If anyone wonders what kind of athletes have been developed at
Jenkins County, this picture speaks 1,000 words! A War Eagle player
helps an injured Bobcat! This is class. This is sportsmanship. This is
War Eagle Athletics!
the previously assigned 3-A Dl, only one,
Swainsboro, is less than 60 miles away.
Scott also explained the loss of revenue
that was going to accompany the Dl
region. The appeal was put together after
the original deadline of November 9 for up
or downward movement in classifications
after conversations between Scott, SCHS
Assistant Athletic Director Terry Markovcic,
and various GHSA officials.
Said Scott afterwards, “We are
thankful to the GHSA for giving us the
opportunity to present our concerns to the
reclassification committee. They listened
to our concerns and allowed us to be in a
region with minimal travel and with teams
that are natural rivals. This was the best
outcome for our students both academically
and athletically.”
Markovcic echoed most local sentiment
when he said, “The opportunity for being
dropped to D2 was a surprise to us all. Two
weeks ago, we really did not think we had
a chance. It brings a lot of excitement to
our sports programs. It is a very good and
competitive region for all our sports.”
“We think this is better for a lot of reasons,”
said Head Football Coach Ron Duncan,
“but have no misunderstanding, it’s still
going to be tough every single week. There
will be a lot less travel and, hopefully, a lot
better gates against local schools that have
become good, friendly rivals.”
Competition was not at the heart of the
matter, no one in the D2 region is in a higher
classification than Dl right now. In the
originally assigned Dl region there were
three currently in AAA and two currently
in AA. There were three private schools
with unlimited resources. In another area,
the numbers are fairer. Savannah Country
Day (135), St. Vincent’s (131), SCPS (119),
and Vidalia, a city school, (48) are loaded
with out-of-district students that SCHS (1)
does not have access to. In the new region
Portal (50) and Savannah High (32) are the
only schools with significant out of district
numbers. The rest grow their own student
athletes. Competition is now basically
apples to apples. The original region, 3-A
D, was not a fit. The new region, 3-A D2,
is a fit.

Two weeks ago (November 9) Screven
County High School received jaw dropping
news when the GHSA Reclassification
Committee released its proposed region
alignments for the upcoming two year
cycle. For SCHS that region was a totally
new version of Region 3-A Dl. Including
three powerhouse private schools dropping
down in class, the region was a horrible fit.
Fortunately, local jaws were realigned on
November 16 when the same committee
voted to grant an SCHS appeal to drop
from the assigned Class A Dl to Class
A D2. By a vote of 12-3 SCHS is now
assigned to Region 3-A D2 for the 2024-25
and 2025-26 school years. Membership in
the new region is loaded with natural and
nearby rivals. It is a good fit. All regions
established by the Reclass Committee
must be approved by the State Executive
Committee on November 29. Last
Thursday, voting to deny the SCHS appeal
were the representatives from Long County,
Muscogee County, and Athens Academy.
Two members were not present.
The proposed region that SCHS now
joins looks exactly as the old Region 3-A
from the years 2020-21 and 2021-22 with
the addition of only Savannah High. SHS
does not play softball, baseball, soccer,
or tennis. Real FTEs for the region show
Savannah High at 639, SCHS at 598, Bryan
County at 561, Claxton at 488, Metter at
463, McIntosh County Academy at 380,
ECI at 327, Jenkins County at 328, and
Portal at 314, Also in the region are the
non-football playing schools Savannah
Classical (84), Savannah Early College
(145), and STEAM Academy of Statesboro
(90). There are no private schools in Class
AD2.
Given virtually no chance of winning,
Screven County High School principal
Brian Scott was granted a spot-on
Thursday’s Reclassification Committee
agenda and made the case. One of the
principal arguments related to travel. Of
the eight other football-playing schools
in the desired 3-A D2 region, six are less
than 60 miles away. Beyond that Savannah
High is 62 miles and MCA is 105. MCA
has always been an outlier in any region.
