Rotarv Club Commemorates 85 Years of
Service and Community Spirit

In a celebration of service, camaraderie,
and community, the Sylvania Rotary
Club and the Millen Rotary Club joined
forces on November 16 at the Sylvania
First United Methodist Church to mark a
significant milestone - the 85th anniversary
of the Sylvania Rotary Club.
Rotary, a global network comprising 1.4
million individuals dedicated to catalyzing
lasting change, embodies a vision where
people unite to address real-world
challenges. For over a century, Rotary's
members, known as 'people of action,' have
channeled their passion and intelligence into
sustainable projects spanning areas such as
literacy, peace, water, and health, striving
to improve our world while upholding the
motto of "Service above Self."
The roots of the Sylvania Rotary Club
trace back to 1938 when the Millen
Rotary Club generously sponsored its
establishment. Initially composed of male
business leaders, the club later welcomed
women whose knowledge and commitment
contributed significantly to its growth and
impact. Today, their collective efforts are
unified under the shared ethos of "Service
above Self."
The evening commenced with a warm
welcome from Sylvania President Dorsia
Atkinson, followed by Preston Dees,
Sargent of Arms for Sylvania, leading the
assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Millen Rotary Club President Sherri
Adam guided the group through the Four
Way Test, a reflection on truth, fairness,
goodwill, and mutual benefit.
Attendees were treated to a delectable
feast courtesy of Fisheye Grill, indulging
in a spread of pork chops, shrimp and grits,
mashed red potatoes, and green beans,
culminating in homemade cakes that
satisfied sweet cravings.
The celebratory atmosphere continued
with a spirited trivia bowl competition
between the clubs. Five contestants
from each club engaged in a battle of
wits, answering questions related to their
respective towns. Despite the friendly
rivalry and some good-natured assistance,
Millen emerged victorious, securing a $75
contribution to their cart fund, dedicated
to Alzheimer's fundraising - a cause
passionately supported by both clubs.
The evening saw an engaging auction
featuring three sumptuous cakes crafted
by Charles and Linda Lee and Darlene
Anthony and the auction winners were,
Allison Willis, Senator Max Bums, and
Dorothy Glisson, delightedly claimed their
Red Velvet, Italian Creme, and Carmel
Cakes, respectively.
As the festivities ended. President
Atkinson extended warm wishes for a
pleasant evening and safe travels to all,
reflecting the sense of fellowship and
community that epitomizes the spirit of the
Rotary Clubs.
The celebration served as a testament to
the enduring commitment of the Sylvania
Rotary Club and its collaborative efforts in
fostering goodwill, community engagement,
and meaningful contributions to causes
close to their hearts.
