Thanksgiving Prayers and Blessings for Your Family Meal This week I am going to do something different. Instead of a hymn, I am going to talk about our Thanksgiving prayers and Blessings. You see, many prayers and blessings can enrich your life and the life of your family as you turn your focus to God's many promises and blessings. Giving thanks through prayer, has the power to turn anxiety in to peace, sadness to joy, and grief into comfort. My Granddad would always pray this prayer at every meal and it always meant so much to all of our family. "Bless the food before us, the family beside us and the love between us. Amen." A good thanksgiving prayer can be a moment of gratitued and joy as your family gathers to have dinner around the table. I wanted to feature a few prayers that I have heard over the years. And, maybe one of these prayers could work for your Thanksgiving this year. 1. "Heavenly Father, we gather today with hearts filled with gratitude. While sharing this meal today, it reminds us of the endless blessings you have bestowed upon us. We pray today in Thanksgiving for this food we share and for all the ways you have shown us your love. In Jesus name we pray. Amen." One very sweet prayer I heard a child say during this season was, "Dear God, God is great, God is good, let us always be thankful for our food, and let us love our Mom and Dad as you love us. Amen." This simple prayer was a taken from the ever loving Child's prayer, "God is great, God is good, let us thank him for our food. By his hands we all were fed, give us Lord our daily bread. Amen." I do remember, that as a child, I would say this prayer, but used the word "spank him for our food" in the place of "thank him for our food." (It was just the way I heard the adults say it.) Another prayer that has been used occasionally is, "Dear God, thank you for this meal and for the hands that prepared it. We give you thanks, most of all, for the gift of your son, Jesus Christ. Please bless our meal and all who are here to share it, and all our loved ones who are unable to be with us today. All this we pray in your son's name, Jesus. Amen." This Thanksgiving holiday season I pray that you remember that this holiday is a beautiful reminder to stop and give thanks for God's blessings, and a great wasy to do that is through prayer. No matter what time of year, the prayers that were listed above, are a beautiful way to bless your families meals and focus our hearts and mind on what matters most. Another good way is to go around the table and each member of the family tell what they are thankful for. First Thessalonians 5:18 says, " Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." I want to leave you with a prayer that I use often. I pray that this Thanksgiving season is filled with love and peace. And may you be thankful for all you have. Dear God, on this Thanksgiving Day, I want to pause and thank you for your blessings. For another day, for family, friends, for food on the table. You are the source of all good things, I praise you for the simple things that bring us joy. Help us keep our eyes on you this day and every day So our lives may be filled with praise and joy. Amen.
