Officially in the Book
On Thursday night, November 16th, the Jenkins County Lady War Eagles softball team
held their annual banquet celebrating the accomplishments of the season. Coach Heam
began the night reminding the girls of the season that they had, which included a record
18 wins and only 8 losses. She reminded the girls that they were there that night because
of softball, but it was tmly more than a game. She stated, “It’s about a team.” And then
she went on to remind them, “You can and will never forget your teammates.” They had a
motto all season of being able to hold the rope for one another.
In addition to the historic record for the Lady War Eagles, the team also set a record
for three girls getting an out-of-the-park homerun. Those girls included Jakhaila Oglesby,
Sha’nya Lake(2), and Avery Wiggins. The Lady War Eagles also had 9 girls who were
named to the all-region teams. -Sha’nya Lake, Katie Lynn Bell, Laura Gayle Dailey,
Jakhaila Oglesby, Mya Abraham were awarded first-team all-region honors. Second-
team, all-region selections were Lohgan Walker, Hillary Garvin, and Lynnsey Lane. And
an honorable mention was given to Kynlee Wallace. Sha’nya Lake was the All-Region
Defensive Player of the Year, and this was the first time a Lady War Eagle had received
this honor.
Team awards included: All A’s awards: Katie Lynn Bell, Lynnsey Lane, Lohgan Walker,
Laura Gayle Dailey, Hillary Garvin, Bethany Asbury, Aubrey Davis, Cayley Linder, and
Kynlee Wallace. All A’s and B’s award was given to Mya Abraham, Sha’nya Lake, Avery
Wiggins, Ladaeshia Williams, and De’Haje Newton. Catcher of the year was Laura Gayle
Dailey and pitcher of the year was Katie Lynn Bell. Team defensive player of the year was
Mya Abraham who had a fielding percentage of .923. The Offensive Player of the year for
the team was Sha’nya Lake who hit an impressive batting average of .412, 33 runs scored,
26 RBIs, and only struck out 7 times. The GRIT award was given to Hillary Garvin. The
statement made for the GRIT award was, “As much as talent counts, effort counts twice.”
The night was completed with a lot of laughter as the three coaches gave out awards that
were based on candies which all highlighted both the toughness of the girls and the “fun
side” of each player. Coach Hearn described this team as having a lot of GRIT all season
long, and this is considered one of the best attributes for a player which describes tmly how
hard each girl worked during the season.
The chapter on this year’s team is now closed; however, what they have accomplished
will be talked about for years to come in the history books of Jenkins County. The team will
lose three seniors but will be returning several players from this year’s team. Coach Heam
something we as a community echo as well, “We cannot wait to see what the future is for
each of these girls.” This season is officially in the books, and until the next chapter begins
we will continue to celebrate the accomplishments of these girls!
