The Ogeechee River and General W.T. Sherman
This week I was looking through some of my history books and found where Sherman had came through Midville,
Georgia and actually spent the night in Herndon, Ga. This is an important part of the history of the Ogeechee River we
should never forget.
On Nov. 15th, 1864, after destroying Atlanta and cutting his communications with the North, Maj. Gen. W. T. Sherman
began his destructive campaign for Savannah which was known as "the March to the Sea." He divided his amiy into
two wings. The Left Wing which consisted of the 14th and 20th Corps.moved east from Atlanta in two columns which
converged on Milledgeville, crossed the Ogeechee River near Louisville, then marched toward Savannah by two routes: the
14th Corps marched on the old road near the Savannah River on Georgia 24 & 17, and ended up in Midville, Ga.
The 15th Corps marched on roads west of the Ogeechee River. The 17th Corps, had been joined by Gen. Shemian and his
staff at Tennille, Ga. they then moved on roads south of the railroad and Williamson Swamp Creek until opposite Burton
or what is known now as Midville, Ga. Station 9 1/2, CRR. On the 30th, the 17th Corps crossed the Ogeechee River and
Gen. Shemian’s headquarters were established there in Midville. That night, the depot and other railway facilities were
completely destroyed by fire. The very next morning, the 17th Corps moved east on the present Ga 17, which it followed to
Savannah. That night, it camped at Herndon, Station 9, after stripping the county of provisions.
I have to say, I find it very interesting that Sherman came through Midville, and spent the night in Herndon. I wonder if
the camp spot is marked? See you next week!
Happy Trails to you! < cM^cte QQdCjer
