Front Street Fitness Building
has a lot of History
This week, let’s take a look at one of the
older buildings in downtown Millen, Ga.
In Jenkins County where Front Street Fitness is located.
Cotton Avenue in Jenkins County. This local fitness center
has been open since around 2007. This particular building
has a good bit of history.
The original building located here burned in 1969. It
had been the location for several stores, such as. Farmer’s
Hardware and Furniture, in 1937 and was owned by the
partnership of John C. Wilson, Raymond Barefield, and
H.E. Thompson. James Lee, who sold dairy equipment,
also had an association with the building. In the 1950s,
Raymond Barefield separated from Farmer’s and he and
his son-in-law, Marion Reese, opened Millen Furniture
Company on the comer of Cotton Avenue and Gray Street.
After the building burned, Ed Wilson, the owner at the
time, replaced it with the current building and continued to
operate as Wilson Furniture until he retired in 2006. Millen
Downtown Development Authority purchased the building
in 2006 and currently leases it to the owner of Front Street
Fitness, Josh Linder.

GSU Hosts War
Eagles Band

Director of Bands at Georgia Southern University, Dr.
John Franklin, attended the East Georgia Marching Band
Championships where he observed our Jenkins County
H.S. Marching Band in competition. So impressed by
our performance, he invited us band to be hosted by GSU
students and faculty for a full day at GSU. The JCHS Band
enjoyed a rehearsal clinic given by Dr. Franklin who brought
our band's sound to another level. Our band was excited to
sit beside skilled university musicians who demonstrated
techniques during the clinic. Many questions were
answered concerning life as a musician at GSU. Students
were encouraged to join the university band, even if they
were not a music major, as the “Southern Pride” Marching
Band passes the 200 member mark in the near future. Our
band looks forward to many more encounters with GSU
in our continuous search for excellence. Thank you. Dr.
Franklin, for taking our little band to higher heights.

the city received $26 million
in TIA funds which I played
a large role in helping
negotiate. This money will
be awarded to the city and
county in two ways over a
ten-year period and I am
happy to say the first part
of these funds were used in
the Foggy Field area. We
let a contract to repave the
road and awarded the bid to
Ellis Wood Contracting at a
price of $64,000. Under my
administration, the Foggy
Field area has been greatly
improved with the water
lines being replaced and
the paving project almost
complete.
In my previous article two
weeks ago, I commented
that Norfolk Southern
wanted to award our city
a grant from their safety
foundation. This has now
come to fruition and the city
will be receiving $54,000.
for a new radio console and
server for our city's police
and fire dispatch. A big
"THANK YOU" to Conner
Poe, lobbyist for Norfolk
Southern.
I am excited about other
things to come for our
city and humbly ask for
your vote in the upcoming
mayoral run-off. We're
moving forward so be on
the lookout to see what
else will be "coming down the
tracks' for our city in the next
few weeks.

With the impending run
off date fast approaching,
I wanted to enlighten the
citizens of our city and our
community on a project
that we have been working
on. In the past, we have
had many complaints from
Foggy Field residents
about the water pressure
in their area. There were
old 1 1/2" galvanized pipes
supplying the entire street
which meant if there was
three or four households
using water, the pressure
went to almost nothing. Not
only were residents dealing
with low water pressure
but there was also no water
volume because of the small
size of the lines. Our city
workers were constantly on
Foggy Field Road repairing
broken lines because the
old pipes were deteriorating
and constantly springing
leaks. Our city council
knew we needed to act so
it was decided that some
of the remaining ARPA
money would be well spent
on fixing these old lines.
The money was spent with
local businesses to make
the repairs East Georgia
Tree Service and Shockley
Plumbing. In addition to
these repairs, we added 6”
water main and two new fire
hydrants to the area which
did not previously have fire
protection.
In the mayoral debate
back in October, I stated that
