Whenever pennies were made in ancient Rome, they
were always stamped with the image of the emperor
on them. It served as a constant reminder to those who
used the coins that they were expected to honor him
and obey his laws.
In the opening verses of His Word, God said, “Let
us make man to be in our image, to be like us.” Moses,
quoting God, said that we have the image of our God
on us. And, the fact that we have the image of God on
us proves our unquestionable worth to God.
People frequently talk about self-worth. And, we
often hear of individuals who have low self-esteem.
Some people even describe themselves by saying,
“I’m certainly not worth very much. I can’t do anything
right.” This unfortunate attitude is a result of believing
the opinions of others who influence us - perhaps
parents, friends, or teachers. That is unfortunate
because they would not want others to make negative
statements about them.
However, it is never about our sense of self-worth,
no matter who influenced us. It is about our God-
worth. Whenever we are tempted to think that we have
no significance or importance, we need to remind
ourselves that we were created in the image of God.
And, even though that image was lost when Adam
and Eve disobeyed God, the story does not end there.
A few verses later, God begins to reveal His plan to
make us a new sin-forgiven creation through the death
of His Son on the cross where we can see our true
worth - our God-worth - in Christ’s work.
Prayer: We admit, Father, that we cannot understand
how much You love us. We accept Your grace and ask
that through Christ, Your Son, our Savior, we will see
our worth to You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

"Redeeming the Time"
Ephesians 5:15-16 - ““Therefore look carefully how
you walk, not as unwise but as wise, redeeming the time,
because the days are evil.”
I believe that when I was a little kid, I grew up in the
golden age of the Dairy Queen. A kid’s meal came with
a plastic coin that could be redeemed for an ice cream. I
could take that coin to the counter (without my parents’
help!) and redeem that plastic coin for an ice cream of
my choice - a vanilla cone, a small sundae, a dilly bar, or
my favorite, a starkiss bar! I felt rich when I was holding
that coin in my hand. That cheap plastic coin represented
something much better to me than the coin - ice cream!
In Ephesians 5, Paul tells the Christians in Ephesus to
redeem the time. What does that mean? Redeeming the
time means exchanging the time you have for something
better. What is our life but time? When we are bom, our
birth certificate is stamped with a time of birth. We are
fed as babies, on time. We count our sleep hours, work
hours and leisure hours based on time. We celebrate
seasons, birthdays, holidays, all based on time. Then
when we die, our death certificate has a time of death.
We measure our lives, our days, our moments, in time.
What is our life but moments? Our years are measured
by months, days, hours, minutes - moments that we live
in. Tomorrow is not here yet and may not come. Yesterday
is gone, only existing in our memories. All we have is
today, and today is made up of moments. Redeeming the
time is spending those moments on something better.
What does God want us to redeem our time for? His
kingdom, His name, His glory. Life is too short, our days
too few, and our world too evil for you to live your life
on your own terms - how you want, what you want, when
you want. God created you to live for Him. He gave you
life to be spent doing His will and not your own. God
created us for His glory and not our own, not to live
selfishly but to live selflessly.
In Daniel 3, three young men were told to worship a
golden statute when the music played. If they followed
that command, they would disobey the law of their God,
which said “you shall have no other gods before me...
you shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I
am the Lord your God.” These three men were brought
before a furious king, who had issued the command, and
had prepared a fiery furnace to throw them into if they
did not obey. The king gave them another opportunity
to bow when the music played. Their response to the
king is found in Daniel 3:17-18, “The God whom we
serve is able to deliver us from the furnace and from your
hand O King, but even if he doesn’t, we still will not
bow down.” Their names were Shadrach, Meshech, and
Abednego, and they were willing to exchange their lives
for something better - God’s glory. Even if it was their
last act on earth, they chose to redeem the time, and live
for God rather than themselves.
