Pentagon official arrested in Georgia human-trafficking sting
A senior Pentagon official who oversaw federally operated school systems has been
arrested in a Georgia human-trafficking sting. The Coweta County Sheriffs Office last
week announced the arrests of 26 people, including Stephen Hovanic, a former chief of
staff for the Department of Defense Education Activity in connection with the trafficking
ring.
Authorities charged Hovanic, 64, with pandering after he allegedly solicited sex in a motel
room with an undercover agent.
Eminent domain case could have widespread property law implications
A hearing began Monday in an eminent domain battle that involves one of rural Georgia’s
poorest areas but could have implications for property law across the state. At stake is
detemiining whether a railroad can legally condemn property to build a rail line 4.5 miles
long that would serve a rock quarry and possibly other industries.
A hearing officer will take up to three days of testimony before making a recommendation
to the Georgia Public Service Commission’s five elected members, who will decide the
case.
The line would be built by the Sandersville Railroad, which is owned by an influential
Georgia family. It would connect to the CSX railroad at Sparta, allowing products to be
shipped widely. Sparta is about 85 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta.
People in the rural neighborhood don't want a train track passing through or near their
property, in part because they think it would enable expansion at a quarry owned by
Heidelberg Materials, a publicly traded German firm.
Some residents already dislike the quarry because it generates noise, dust and truck
traffic. Supporters say if the railroad is built, the quarry will move its operation farther
from houses, trains will reduce trucks on roads and the railroad will build berms to shield
residents.
Buford bank customer jumps county, steals money
Buford Police are looking for a woman who jumped over a bank county, threatened a
clerk, and stole money before leaving. Buford police said that Sarahdia Camell, 32, was
in a Chase Bank on Buford Drive when she got into an argument with a teller. Police said
Camell jumped over the bank counter, grabbed a pair of scissors, and held them toward the
teller. She then opened the cash box, took $750 and left through a side door.

World’s largest iceberg heads toward South Georgia
The world’s largest iceberg has dislodged from its position in the Weddell Sea after more
than 3 decades and is now swiftly drifting past the northern tip of Antarctic Peninsula,
propelled by strong winds and ocean currents. The reasons behind the iceberg’s sudden
movement remain unclear, with scientists speculating that a combination of factors might
have contributed to this unexpected event.
