Winter Sports are Now Upon Us
From the last whistle of the high school football season
for the Jenkins County War Eagles until the first whistle
of the Jenkins County Lady War Eagles basketball game
was just over 48 hours. Defensive Coordinator for JCHS
football Jason Boyton, the Girls’ Head Basketball coach,
and Defensive Line Coach Quinton Sweet, also the Boys’
Head Basketball Coach, finished up one sport to quickly
transition to the next. From now until February basketball
will be in full force.
While it sounds like we have hit repeat on a song, last
season for the Lady War Eagles and War Eagles was historic.
While we say this a lot about our sports teams, it truly attests
to where the athletic programs are now. Last season, the
Lady War Eagles finished 19-8 and regional runner-up. The
boys’ team finished 21-7 and was also regional runner-up
in the tournament.
Both War Eagles and Lady War Eagles are preparing for a
great season in front of them with several returning starters
back from last year’s successful teams. The War Eagles
lost three key components to last years team in Marcus
Golphin, Courtney Smith, and Demontre Moore. Returning
for the War Eagles will be first-team all-region selection
James Allen. In addition to Allen, he will be surrounded by
senior leadership ZZ Wilson, Tyrone Martin, and Jeremiah
Gilmore. Junior Tyler Williams who was a big contributor
last season will also be back for the War Eagles. There will
be several other pieces that undoubtedly will fill in the
places for Coach Sweet and the War Eagles.
The War Eagles will look to battle Portal for the region.
Portal will be returning nearly their entire team from last
year’s regional championship team. In preseason rankings.
Portal will start out the season ranked second, while the
War Eagles will be preseason ranked 10th. These two
teams battled for the regional championship in last year’s
tournament and it would be a surprise to no one to see them
there again.
On the girls' side of the ball, the War Eagles have a strong
senior class. When these girls were in 8th grade, they
brought home the middle school regional championship
and ever since then have been producing excellent seasons
for head coach Jason Boyton. The team will be led by last
year’s first-team all-region selections in Sha’nya Lake and
Neveah Campbell. Last season, in the last regular season
game of the year Lake crossed the 1000-point club for
the Lady War Eagles in her three seasons. The Lady War
Eagles will miss the production of second-team all-region
selections Jashlyn Allen and Shamya Thomas who both
graduated. This year, Konstance Langston will return after
an ACL in jury stopped her last season. Also returning will
be seniors Talaya Milton and Tiajah Chandler.
Montgomery County will once again look to be the
toughest opponent in Region 3. They are preseason ranked
number three. They defeated the Lady War Eagles in the
regional championship game and it appears these two
teams will be favored to be in the same spot again this year.
The Lady War Eagles were able to squeeze in two games
during the Thanksgiving Break as EBA hosted several
teams for some early-season basketball. The Lady War
Eagles fell short against both EBA and Pinewood during
the two-day event.
The War Eagles and Lady War Eagles will play at
Claxton on Tuesday, November 28th, and will have their
first home game of the season against Treutlen on Friday
night, December 1st. During home and away games the
girls will top off at 6:00 with the boys’ games to follow at
approximately 7:30.
In the coming weeks, the Jenkins County Times will
continue to preview the season and provide up-to-date stats
and results as the season progresses.
