Tug Dandelion on the Ogeechee River,
December 1864
My Great-Grandfather fought in the Civil War. He told me many stories about the war. But, one
thing I remember him talking about was the Tug Dandelion. I only remembered a few details, so I
look it up and here is what I found out.
The Tug Dandelion was used on the Ogeechee River around December 1864 and it was marked
as the opening of communication between Admiral Dahlgren and General Sherman. This special tug
boat was used to patrol navigable waterways (including the Ogeechee) of the Confederacy to prevent
the South from trading with other countries.
The Tug Dandelion was a small, powerful boat and was built in Antietam in 1862 by Winson and
Cocapable. She was capable of steering large ships by pulling or pushing them. It was used to assist
these ships in places where they are unable to maneuver themselves. This Dandelion Tug Boat was
also used by the Union Navy during The Civil War, from 1861 to 1865. This special tug boat was
decommissioned in New York on July 14, 1865, and was sold in August of the same year.
