Wayne County theater owner agrees to
improve access for disabled patrons
As part of a settlement reached under the
Americans with Disabilities Act, the owner of
a movie theater in Wayne County has agreed
to obtain equipment to assist patrons with
disabilities. Austin Hickox Legacy LLC, owner
of the Strand Dinner Cinema in Jesup reached
the settlement last week. The investigation
was the result of a mother on behalf of her
child with visual impairments that the Strand
didn’t have audio description devices available.
Under federal law, private entities that own
places of public accommodation are prohibited
from discriminating on the basis of disability.
Richmond County man sentenced to 15
years in prison for illegal gun possession
Todd Joseph Harbuck, 48, of Augusta has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for
possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. As described in court, Columbia County
Sheriff’s Deputies responded in July 2022 to a report of domestic violence in Grovetown
and found Harbuck’s ex-girlfriend with injuries that included a serious laceration to her
head and a bite mark on her ami.
Harbuck was previously sentenced to prison in 2008 after pleading guilty to a possession
of a firearm by a convicted felon. He has prior state felony convictions that include assaulting
and stabbing a loss prevention officer; attacking a medical college of Georgia police officer
who attempted to arrest him in 2000.
Georgia Republicans advance maps as congressional proposal waits in the wings
Georgia Republicans last week pushed forward new legislative maps that would preserve
their majorities in the state House and Senate, while still not revealing how they want to
redraw Georgia’s 14 congressional districts.
Democrats targeted the Senate map as flawed, saying it fails to create significant
opportunities for black voters in the 10 districts that a federal judge identified as violating
the law. Democrats also questions the House map, because it would alter or eliminate two
districts in which no ethnic group is a majority.
Lawmakers are meeting in special session after U.S. District Judge Steve Jones mled in
October that Georgia’s legislative and congressional maps violate federal law.
3 students overdose on fentanyl at same Gwinnett County school
School leaders are vowing to prevent more overdoses at a Gwinnett high school after
three students were exposed to fentanyl. The three girls are students at Berkmar High
School. All three girls survived, likely due to the Narcan that was put in the schools this year.
Administrators said none of the girls knew they were consuming fentanyl and that they all
took the drags off-campus but had delayed reactions.
Voting group founded by Abrams, faces financial scrutiny
The New Georgia Projet, which helped turn Georgia into a swing state, confronts
allegations of mismanagement, undocumented spending. The votings rights organization
founded by Stacey Abrams is beset by allegations of financial misuse and irregularities,
according to a six-month investigation. The organization is conducting its own internal
probe into its finances in response to the claims of irregularities, one of its two board chairs,
Frank Wilson, said.
The move comes as the group’s tax filings indicate that its former executive director —
who was hand-picked by Abrams in 2014 but fired last year without notice — owes the
organization thousands of dollars in “non-work-related” reimbursements.

A Valdosta man has been arrested on kidnapping, aggravated assault and several other
charges. According to the Valdosta Police Department (VPD), the crimes began Thursday
Nov. 16 to Sunday 19.

female victim reported that Jamie Heath, 50, had forced her into her vehicle at gunpoint and
made her drive to his residence while he was threatening her.
According to the victim, when she got to his residence, she was able to call 911 and as
officers were arriving. Heath ran from the vehicle. The area was searched and he was not
