Crowe-Fields
Funeral Home, Inc.
Maybe you are new to the area or maybe you just do not
know much history on this beloved funeral home located
in Jenkins County.
However, in 1937, Mr Edgar D. Fletcher saw a need for a
full service funeral home in Jenkins County. This is when
he started Fletchers & Sons Funeral Home. Mr. Fletcher
needed a partner after World War II, and he asked Ralph
Crowe, Sr. to join him in the business.
In the mid-fifties, Rober Fields, Jr. at age 15, came to
work for the two business men. Now, during this time,
funeral homes provided the ambulance services as well
as insurance along with the funeral services. This made it
easier for anyone requiring their services to get everything
in one place.
In the mid-seventies, Ralph Crowe, Jr. joined the staff,
and a few years later. Bob Fields decided to come home to
Millen and joined the business. This is when the name was
changed to Crowe-Fields Funeral Home.
Over the years, many improvements have been made to
the beautiful house on Winthrope Ave. The inside of the
house was remodeled at one point.
Ralph Crowe, Jr. still operates the Funeral Home and he
continues being committed to the legacy passed down to
him through generations, "to provide the same personal
service that our teachers and mentors taught us."

The Most Wonderful
Time of the Year
Christmas Memories from Jean
As a child, one of the first memories of Christmas day
was waking up in the morning (early of course, but we
knew better than to disturb my Mom or Dad) and feeling
the rustle of a Christmas stocking under my toes at the end
of the bed. Yes. Not on the fireplace, but at the end of my
bed. Always the consisting of a comic I was reading that
year, a selection box of chocolates, usually dipped into
before breakfast, and other little presents. Not too many
but enough to feel that the day was special. Sometimes but
not always, there was a bigger present waiting downstairs.
If there was, that was a bonus which had not been expected.
It was our Christmas treat to have chicken for dinner.
Chicken was comparatively expensive then, so it wasn’t
a usual meal. I never tasted turkey until I was an adult,
but the chicken was always wonderful with the usual
accompaniments. After dinner, we had to be very quiet
while Mom and Dad listened on the radio, or later on
watched on the TV, the parade and of course, listen to
the Christmas music. My two elder brothers usually went
out then with their friends but my younger brother and I
generally played cards with Mom and Dad. One Christmas
card game was more memorable than most because I was
winning at the game and got very excited and managed to
get a piece of candy cane stuck in the back of my throat. A
big concern all round with my Mom making me some hot
tea and drink it as fast as I could to make it dissolve. It
worked though! It did dissolve.
I love remembering my Christmas' from the past. It
makes Christmas in my older years more merry and bright.
Merry Christmas!

93 years young!
BY ROBERT FROST
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the
village though.
He will not see me
stopping here
To watch his woods,
fill up with snow.
My little horse must
think it queer
To stop without a
farmhouse near
Between the woods
and frozen lake
The darkest evening
of the year.
He gives his harness
bells a shake
To ask if there is
some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
