The Coal Chute
of Millen
Did you know that Millen had a Coal
Chute? I actually did, and it was located
downtown behind the railroad depot that
still exists and is now used for a Museum
and is the offices for The Jenkins County Chamber of
Commerce.
This four story railroad coal chute was built in 1925 and
was constructed of cast in place concrete. A neat fact is
that is was the only Coal Chute that was constructed on the
Central of Georgia Railroad and it was one of only three that
remained in the state. Actually it remained unitl 1995, when
it was demolished.
It was used for many years to fill train cars with coal to
travel all over the world for heat and such. It also provided
coal for the areas homes and businesses for heat as well.
Many of Jenkins County's residents have often discussed
the ole Chute and how it was missed, even if it was just
there to see and not use. There was a lot of history in this
ole Chute! If you would like to see pictures of the chute and
leam more on the history, please visit the Jenkins County
Museum in downtown Millen.
Happy Christmas Y'all!

Kent dedicated into
Millen Church of God
Brooklyn Denee Kent was dedicated to the Lord at the
Millen Church of God on Sunday, Dec. 10 with her parents,
grandparents, aunts, and uncles looking on. Pictured with
Brooklyn are Pastor Josh Farthing, uncle; B.L. Kent,
paternal grandfather; Grayson Kent, father; Ashley Kent,
mother; and maternal grandfather Kevin. Brooklyn has a
brother, Brantley. After the ceremony, a Christmas meal
was served in the social hall, prepared by members of
the church. On the table was Barbara Jackson’s ice box
fruitcake, and B.L. Kent’s famous chicken and dumplins!

Beaver Trail
boardwalk repaired
at Magnolia Springs
Thanks to the Georgia Power Foundation; they
contributed funding that allowed us to repair one of the
boardwalks along the Beaver Trail at Magnolia Springs.
Next time you visit the park, be sure to hike the Beaver
Trail and see the improvements! Photo by Ana Collins.

CORNER
"If:
A Father's Advice to His Son"
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make
allowance for their
doubting too.
If you can wait
and not be tired by
waiting,
Or being lied about,
don't deal in lies,
Or being hated,
don't give way to
hating,
And yet don't look
too good, nor talk
too wise
If you can dream
- and not make
dreams your master.
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim.
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wom-out tools
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss.
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the will which says to them; 'Hold on!'
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much.
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
