"The Real Thing"
It has always been difficult for missionary families
to be together at special times for important occasions.
Often hearts ache for the joy and happiness that bonds
hearts and unites loved ones for special reasons and
seasons.
The headmaster of a school for the children of
missionaries knew that feeling very well. His parents
were missionaries, and he spent many birthdays alone
as well as many holidays apart from family members.
He knew that one of his students, in particular, was
having a difficult time one Christmas and decided to
visit him in his room.
After talking for a few minutes he asked, “John,
what would you like for Christmas this year?”
Looking at a picture of his father on the wall, he said,
“I would like my father to step out of that frame.”
That’s what Jesus did. He “stepped out” of the Old
Testament “frames” that prophesied His coming. He
became the “real thing” when he walked among the
people, laid His hands on the sick, and restored them
to health, fed the hungry with bread that would last
throughout eternity, and gave the water of life to those
dying of thirst.
The Son of God willingly and voluntarily made
Himself “nothing” when He assumed a human body
and a human nature and became the “real thing.” Jesus
is God seeing us through human eyes, hearing us with
human ears, touching lives with human hands, and
loving us with a human heart. In Jesus, we see God
with us - Immanuel!
Prayer: Thank You, Father, for sending us the “Real
Thing.” Through Your Son we know how much You
love us, understand us, and know our every need. In
Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Scripture For Today: Philippians 2:5-11 Who, being
in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be
equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation,
taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the
likeness of men.

"Hope"
Matthew 1:20-21 - ““But as he considered these
things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him
in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear
to take Mary’ as your wife, for that which is conceived
in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and
you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people
from their sins. ’’
Did your life turn out the way you wanted it to? Did
every one of your dreams become reality? Most of our
lives don’t turn out the way we wanted, because life
causes pain and hurt, and is full of problems. Maybe
you've experienced loss - a pet, a friend, a job, a 401k, a
home, a loved one. Maybe you’ve experienced deep hurt
- a friend turned enemy, your reputation attacked, your
family attacked, you had your heart broken, you didn’t
marry the one you loved, you never had the children
you longed for. Maybe you’ve experienced pain - a
debilitating disease, suffered through sickness, cancer,
you’ve been a caregiver to an aging parent or a dying
spouse. This life hurts - it is full of pain and problems.
Joseph’s life hurt too. He was engaged to a young
woman that he loved, when he found out she was
pregnant, and the child did not belong to him. Think of
the pain and problems caused by a teenage pregnancy
outside of marriage. Think of Joseph’s broken heart -
there had never been a child conceived by the Holy
Spirit before, it was unbelievable. In a culture where
Joseph and Mary had probably never even touched
hands before - Mary was pregnant with another’s child.
Joseph’s heart was broken, his fiance was tainted, a real
child was now in the picture, and his future was changed
forever. The reality of Joseph’s life was no longer what
he had dreamed of and hoped for. Joseph hurt - he was
in pain because of real problems.
Matthew 1:20-21 tells us that God walked into the
middle of Joseph’s pain and gave him hope. God sent
an angel with this message, “Do not fear.” Do not fear,
because Mary is telling you the truth - this child has been
conceived by the Holy Spirit, not another man. Then
God had a greater truth for Joseph - this child would be
named Jesus because He would save His people from
their sins. Jesus is the Savior of the world.
Jesus said in John 16:33, “I have said these things to
you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you
will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome
the world.” We need real hope in a world full of
tribulation - real hurt, real pain, real problems. Hope is
the expectation of good. Real Hope is found in Jesus.
HowisJesusourhope? □ DlnJohnO □ 10D:D27n-n29
□ Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them,
and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they
will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my
hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater
than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the
Father’s hand.” Jesus says that if you believe in Him, no
one can snatch you out of His hand, no one can snatch
you out of God’s hand. □ □ □ □ □
Salvation in Jesus means eternal security - and that is
our hope. What does that mean? It means that you can
lose everything in this life - you can lose everything you
own, you can lose everyone you know and love, you
can lose your health, you can lose your independence,
you can lose your mobility, you can lose your sanity
- but you cannot lose your eternal life that is in Jesus.
Whatever hurt, whatever pain, whatever problems this
life brings - my hope is in Heaven with Jesus, because
He has given me eternal life in Him.
