Metier Bank Teller sentenced to stealing
$90,000
Kayla Evans of Metter has been sentenced
to prison after pleading guilty to skimming
money from a convenience store’s deposit.
Evans, worked as a teller for the Synovus Bank
in Metter has been ordered to pay $97,165 in
restitution.
Evans personally handled the store’s
deposits, frequently skimming cash for her
personal use. Accountants for the store began
noticing discrepancies.
Claxton man sentenced to 20 years
Tony Deshawn Slater, of Claxton was
sentenced to two decades in federal prison for
trafficking cocaine. He will also serve three
years of supervised release once he completes his prison sentence. Slater was one of 52
defendants named in a November 2022 indictment. The investigation identified smuggling
in Bulloch, Burke, Candler, Effingham, Evans, Liberty, Richmond and Tattnall counties
from 2016.
Tax preparer sentenced to prison for evading taxes
A Bulloch county tax preparer has been sentenced to two years in prison for tax evasion.
Samir Patel was sentenced to tax evasion and ordered to pay $550k in restitution.
Patel was a tax return preparer at a national return preparation business. In 2015, Patel
purchased a franchise of the business in Claxton, Ga. As the owner, he hired, trained, and
supervised tax preparers, and continued to prepare returns for customers. Patel, however,
willfully filed false income tax returns that omitted more than $1.28 million in income
- including almost $1.18 million from S&W Amusements, a company that placed coin
operated amusement machines in convenience stores and gas stations - and evaded proper
assessment of his personal taxes for years 2015, 2016, and 2017.
Gov. Kemp swears in Nigel Lange as inspector general
Governor Brian Kemp swore in Nigel Lange as Inspector General last week. Nigel
has been the interim inspector general for the past year. The office of Inspector General
is charged with preventing, detecting, identifying, exposing and eliminating fraud, waste,
abuse, and corruption.
Company cancels facility in Liberty County amidst controversy
A log fumigation company has canceled plans to relocate to Liberty County after
backlash from residents and county leaders. The owner of the company would have been
Weyerhaeuser, which is Georgia’s largest private landowner. Residents were concerned
because chemicals used in the process are toxic and known to present a serious health risk to
those exposed to it. The company decided it would not build the facility in Georgia.
Man arrested in Statesboro shooting
A shooting suspect was arrested this week in connection to a June incident that left one
man injured. According to the Statesboro Police Department, 39-year-old Travis Webb, of
Statesboro, was apprehended in Augusta on Monday. He had active warrants for aggravated
assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and parole violation. Webb is accused
of shooting another 39-year-old Statesboro man in Groover Homes on June 14.
Football coach and Georgia native dead at 37
Jada Brown, a college football coach and Atlanta native has died at the age of 37. Brown
served as the defensive coach at Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, NC. His cause
of death has not been revealed. .
