It is Christmas Week; I hope you are enjoying
the days with friends and family! When the paper
is delivered and you are reading this, Christmas
Day will have passed, and the New Year will be
quickly approaching. This means that it is Bowl
Week, and all the big games are either played
or about to be played. The biggest games of the
Bowl Season will be played on Saturday (Georgia
vs Florida State), and on New Year’s Day when
the College Football Playoffs are set to begin.
Already in some of the “smaller” bowl games
fans witnessed Western Kentucky University
mount an unprecedented comeback to win in
overtime by a final score of 38-35.
Recently, ESPN simulated, with the help of a
computer, the remainder of the NFL season. The
result was a win by the Kansas City Chiefs over
the San Francisco 49ers. If you follow Taylor
Swift, or should I say you are a “Swiftie,” this
will make you more than excited! I am not sure
how accurate the simulation will be, but I am
certain it will make many happy if it were to fall
this way.
Speaking of the Kansas City Chiefs and Taylor
Swift, the media went into a frenzy when Swift
and superstar Travis Kelce of the Kansas City
Chiefs started dating in September. As a result
of this relationship, the jersey sales for Kelce
increased by 400%. Ticket prices to attend a
Kansas City Chiefs game also skyrocketed as the
crazed Swift fans hoped to get a glimpse of Swift
at a game. One thing is for certain in our nation,
regardless if it is music or sports Americans are
obsessed with being entertained!
As I conclude writing this Under the Bleachers,
with only one more for the year, I am reminded
that tonight is the longest night of the year. While
the weather is supposed to be warmer over the
days ahead, the darkness grows deep on the first
night of winter. For just over 10 hours darkness
will cover the sky in Millen. For many, the
longest night of the year is just another night. For
others, the night signals the darkness that has
overshadowed the soul due to loss, heartache,
pain, or many other “dark” moments.
As a reminder, the longest night should also be
a gentle and hopeful reminder that on December
22nd daylight begins to be a little longer; even
if only by a minute or two. Psalm 30:5(b) says
Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes
with the morning. There is great hope in knowing
that darkness does not always last. Just as it was
on the night of the Savior’s birth, a night was filled
with an angelic host as the angels proclaimed
that the Messiah had come to a group of lowly
shepherds. Let us not forget that the wise men
saw a star that guided them to the greatest hope
that had ever been given to man as they searched
for the newborn King.
