GHSA Playoffs
Wrapping up
The GHSA State Playoff Championships have moved to
Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The final football season games
began on Monday afternoon. The championship games
kicked off with Bowdon vs. Brooks County. Bowdon won
the Class A Division II championship 34-14, while Toombs
County won Class A Division I 38-18.
On Tuesday, Burke County had to face Carver
Columbus. Carver Columbus rolled over Burke County
52-14. Calhoun won the 3A Championship. They defeated
Jefferson 20-7. 4A North Oconee defeated Marist 14-7.
5A Milton won big over Hughes in a high-scoring affair
56-35. In the 6A Championship, Grayson knocked off
Carrolton 38-24.
This week’s championship games marked the end of the
2024 football season. Although the season has been filled
with good games, it will be remembered for the hurricane
delays that caused it to end one week later than normal.

Chuck Sanders
Named Class A
Region 3 Athletic
Director of the Year
A Very Merry Holiday
Sports Edition
Jenkins County War Eagles’ Athletic Director Chuck
Sanders has been named the Class A Region 3 Athletic
Director of the Year. Sanders also won this award in
2023. This is well-deserved and hard-earned. Photo
submitted.
For the second year straight. Chuck Sanders has been
named the Athletic Director of the Year for Class A
Division II Region 3. Sanders is in his 11th year as the
Athletic Director for the War Eagles; he is also one of the
coaches for the football team.
While coaches are seen on the sidelines and in front of
everyone, the athletic director keeps everything in line
behind the scenes. Often operating behind the scenes.
Coach Sanders ensures all the details are ready for
gameday in every sport. He schedules referees, umpires,
and other officials, arranges game schedules, ensures
support staff are in position, ensures coaches have finished
their certifications, and perfomis many other tasks. Most
never see the work that goes into the athletic director's role.
Congratulations on this well-deserved award for Chuck
Sanders for the second year straight!
It is almost Christmas...but the Playoffs First
While this is the “Christmas Edition” of The Jenkins County
Times, there is plenty of sports to be played on the national
scene. Tis’ the Season for bowl games and plenty of football
games heading towards the new year. Georgia Southern will
play in New Orleans against Sam Houston in the R&L Carriers
New Orleans Bowl.
Even though bowl games have started, there are usually
fun football games. All eyes will be on the newly formatted
NCAA Football Playoffs. This weekend, demon will travel
to Texas, Tennessee will meet up with Ohio St. SMU will play
Penn State, and all eyes in Georgia will be watching Indiana
and Notre Dame on Friday night. The Indiana and Notre Dame
game-winner will play Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on January
1st.
The expanded college football playoffs have been coming
for a long time. Fans across college football have been asking
for this for many years, and finally, after a long wait, the first
twelve-team playoff. The twelve-team playoff replaces the
four-team playoff enjoyed over the last couple of years.
The transfer portal is making more news than the playoffs
right now. If players want to transfer to a new college, they can
submit their names to other colleges. Until recently, players
who transferred out of their college were required to sit out for
one year. Now, players can transfer without any consequences.
Now, every college program in the country is looking more like
a professional team than what college used to look like.
Is It Spring Yet...
This week, area residents got an early taste of spring before
the first day of winter. Or maybe it was a taste of mid-fall.
Regardless of what season we experienced this week, it was
warm and made sports fans like me want to get outside! Indoor
sports are fun, but outdoor sports are the best!
Baseball teams continue the offseason free-agent frenzy,
which has been filled with high-dollar signings. 2021 Atlanta
Braves World Series hero Max Fried will have a new team. He
has traded in his Braves uniform for the pinstripes of the New
York Yankees.
MLB finished its Winter Meetings, as it is known. Many
free-agent signings took place, including the one for Max
Fried. Fans of the Atlanta Braves are wondering when they
will make a move. Will it be a blockbuster trade or a free agent
signing? Another possibility is that the Braves will look like
they did last year. If there are no injuries, the Braves will be a
favorite even without big moves.
Almost Over but Not Yet...
The year is nearly over, but we have much to do in the sports
world to finish it. Sports in Jenkins County will go into a silent
night after Saturday, December 20. The boys’ and girls’ teams
will play on Friday, the 19th, and Saturday, the 20th. The boys
will not play again until December 30th in Statesboro, and both
teams will be in action on the road on January 3rd.
With sports going silent, The Jenkins County Times will
continue to bring you the best sports coverage in the area.
Next week, we will summarize sports around Jenkins County
in 2024, including our yearly picture of the year! We will also
look at local and national happenings.
Farewell 2024...
As we bid farewell to this year’s sports season, let’s hope
for a prosperous new year filled with thrilling games, new
challenges, and cherished moments. Whether you’re cheering
from the stands or playing on the field, remember that the joy
of sports is meant to be shared.
From Under the Bleachers, I wish everyone a joyful holiday
season filled with love, laughter, and much sportsmanship!
