The 2014 State Champions were honored in a celebration at Jenkins County High School’s Roy Head Stadium on Senior night this year. SponsonMfl&ilahs County Sports fomwer 50 years! Jenkins County Lady War Eagles Basketball Coach Jason Boynton resigned after eight successlul seasons for the Lady War Eagles. He remains the Defensive Coordinator for the football team. Justin Sheppard replaced Boynton as the new head coach. —photo by Danielle M. Davis. The Dawgs will face Notre Dame to kick off the New Year on January 1st. Also in the quarterfinals are Boise St. vs Penn St., Oregon vs. Ohio St., and Texas vs. Arizona St. The first round of the playoffs did not provide exciting football like fans had hoped for. Every game played ended in a large margin of defeat. Texas handled Clemson 38-24, Tennessee was stoned 42-17, Penn St. jumped on SMU 38-10, and in the battle for Indiana, Notre Dame quickly handled Indiana 27-17. In non-playoff news, Georgia Southern lost their third bowl game in a row, losing to Sam Houston this year 31-26. Christmas Day was an NBA fan’s paradise. There were five matchups on Christmas Day, and this year’s games were instant classics. The Knicks won over the Spurs 117- 114; the Mavericks lost to the Timberwolves 105-99; the 76ers over the Celtics 118-114; a last-second win by the Lakers over the Warriors 115-113; and in the final game of the night the Suns won 110 to 100. NBA on Christmas is a tradition that started in 1947, marking 77 years of basketball on Christmas Day. The NBA began in 1946, making this one of the longest- running traditions in basketball. The Knicks have played the most games on Christmas Day, they have played 57 times. The fomier Georgia Bulldog, Anthony Edwards, made his Christmas Day debut this year as he plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Finding the record holder for most points scored on Christmas Day would require a fan to look back to 1984 when Bernard King scored 60 points for the Knicks. Former Raptors star Tracy McGrady is the record holder for points per game. He has not played for several years but averaged 43.3 points per game over three games. NBA teams have played about 30 games thus far this season. The season for an NBA team is 82 games long. The teams are nearing the all-star break, which will take place in February. The Cavaliers in the East and the Thunder in the West are the favorites heading down the last 42-game stretch. The Atlanta Hawks are 15-15 on the season and sit in 7th place. Time Magazine announced their Athlete of the Year this past week. The WNBA sensation Caitlin Clark was the winner of this year’s award. Clark filled arenas for her final season at Iowa and is doing the same for WNBA arenas for her team, the Indiana Fever. She helped revolutionize women’s basketball and brought many fans to a sport not watched by many. In addition, Clark has been a positive role model for young girls to look up to. Hopefully, your favorite team will win their championship! As you make your resolutions for the new year, make sure you add as a resolution to attend as many War Eagle sporting events as you can! The War Eagles celebrated after winning their second round game, making a historic ran through the 2024 football season. Below are twelve photos highlighting some of the most significant moments for the War Eagles this past year. The team’s success on the field in 2024 was a testament to the hard work of players and coaches and a community that supports its local team. Many other pictures could have been found to celebrate this season's many accomplishments, but these moments stood out. These pictures highlight coaches who have stepped down from their post as Head Coach. These coaches had impacts on and off the field for players. Some of their impacts as coaches and accomplishments will not be realized for many years; some are immediately recognizable. Those coaches will pass the torch of a successful career. The teams have had a regional and state impact in every sport this past year. The name Jenkins County War Eagles is known in every sport. The teams have not been known as the easy team to beat, but with their successes, they have become the team that can win any day. The regional impact was shown in a recent Jenkins County Times Sports report about Athletic Director Chuck Sanders, who was named Regional Athletic Director of the Year. Congratulations to all the hard work in 2024 War Eagles! You gave fans another great year, and we all, with anticipation, look forward to 2025! Good Luck and GO WAR EAGLES! The Lady War Eagles closed their season out with a big win over Claxton. Unfortunately, the Lady War Eagles did not make playoffs this season, but did have many successes on the field including eight players earning all-region honors. At the end of the softball season, Head Coach Renee Hearn resigned from her position as Lady War Eagle Head Coach. Photo Submitted. The War Eagles Tennis Team was crowned regional champions! This was the first regional championship for the War Eagles tennis team. The War Eagles would be defeated in the Sweet 16! Photo Submitted. After starting the season 0-11, the War Eagles baseball team got hot down the stretch. A nine-game win streak to close the season led the War Eagles to a regional runner-up. The War Eagles advanced to the Sweet 16 before being eliminated! Photo Submitted. The Jenkins County Lady War Eagle Tennis team finished the season as Region 3 Runner-up! Photo Submitted. Coach Zac Clark resigned as War Eagle baseball coach and accepted the head coaching job at Statesboro High School. Clark, a 2008 graduate of Jenkins County was a consistent figure the last several years on the sideline. Photo Submitted. Charlie Waters became the winningest coach in War Eagle football history. In a 48-19 win over Portal, Waters made history! Coach Waters holds a sign celebrating his 48th win.
