“Hi I have been invited to
share my recipes in our new
and exciting county news
paper. I love cooking for my
family and hope some of
my recipes will tickle your
tastebuds.”
Grandma’s Buttermilk
Biscuits
1/2 cup Crisco
1 cup buttermilk
1-1/2 cup SR flour
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Place Crisco in mixing bowl
and add buttermilk and
flour. Beat with a fork until
smooth. In a small bowl,
add a cup of flour. Make a
hole in the center of the flour
to drop a spoon of dough.
Roll dough in flour until
thoroughly coated. Then
roll in hands until a ball is
formed. Place the biscuit on
a greased pan and flatten it
with your fingers. Bake until
golden brown. Makes 10-12
biscuits.
Chocolate Pie
Pie filling:
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup SR flour
2 Tbs. cocoa
4 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla flavoring
1 stick butter
2 baked pie shells
Meringue:
7 egg whites
7 TBSP of sugar
Preheat oven to 350. Mix
dry ingredients and add
milk. Blend well, then add
beaten egg yolks to mixture.
Save egg whites. Cook over
medium heat, stirring until
pudding thickens. Turn heat
down to low and stir in butter
and vanilla. Pour into pie
shells and top with meringue.
Meringue:
Add egg whites to the bowl.
Beat on high until mixture
begins to thicken. Add 1
tablespoon sugar per egg.
(You will know they are
ready when you turn mixing
bowl upside down and eggs
don’t move). Spread evenly
on pies. When spreading,
whip meringue up into a
peak. Bake for 10 minutes,
or until meringue is light
golden brown. Enjoy!
Chicken ‘n Dumplings
1 fryer, cut up
Frozen dumplings (I use
Anne’s)
4 boiled eggs, sliced
Salt and pepper, to taste
1/2 stick butter
1/2 cup milk
2 TBSP cornstarch
Boil chicken until tender.
Turn heat to medium and
drop dumplings, one at the
time. When dumplings begin
to roll and soften, add a layer
of eggs. Continue layering
and turn heat to low. Add
butter. Mix cornstarch and
milk and pour over dump
lings to thicken. This is
finger lickin’ good!

A STRANGER’S
GAME by Colleen
Coble. Torie Bergstom
hasn’t been back in Georgia
since she was ten, but that
didn’t keep her from getting
her best friend a job at her
family’s properties on Jekyll
Island. It was a decision she
would quickly come to regret
when her friend was found
drowned in the waters off the
island. Torie knew something
was wrong when she heard
that had happened, though,
as her friend was terrified of
swimming. She knows that
she’s got to do something
to figure out what really
happened, so she heads
over to
Jekyll
Island
hotel
under an
alias, only
to realize
that the
person who
murdered
her friend
will not
hesitate to
kill again.
Well, that’s all for now -
see you at the library!

the following year. “I began
working at Evans Rehab Ser

some home health for St. Jo

returning to my roots.
In 2008 Katie returned to
Sylvania and married Billy
Blitchington, the couple have
two children. The Outpatient

orthopedics. “We have an im

this line of work in the first
place,” Katie explains.
Katie took a job in ortho

hearing the patients talk about
how their lives were returned
to normalcy after attending
outpatient therapy, struck a
chord with the young Katie

must admit. I’ve never known
anyone with a Gemian de

Katie and her staff have big

“It’s easy to become a patient

February is National Pet
Dental Health Month
Imagine how you would feel if
you skipped brushing your teeth for
months and never saw the dentist.
Not only would your mouth feel un
healthy, but you probably wouldn’t
have many teeth left in your old
age! Because dental health is so
important to our overall wellbeing,
preventable infections and diseases
might even cut your life short.
Unfortunately, this is too often
the reality for many of our pets,
simply because some pet owners do
not know about proper dental care
for cats and dogs. But San Diego
Humane Society has many resources
that can help people take care of
their pets’ dental health and help
them live longer, healthier lives.
February is Pet Dental Health
Month, which is a great time to
remind pet owners of the importance
of dental care.
Dental disease affects up to
90% of dogs and cats in the
United States. It is caused when
bacteria in the mouth solidifies to
form plaque on the teeth, which
will harden into tartar in 3-5 days
if the teeth are not brushed —
causing inflammation, bleeding,
tooth loss and bad breath.
Once tartar forms, it can only
be removed by a professional
cleaning, much like the cleanings
you get from your own dentist.
Studies have shown untreated
dental disease can even contrib
ute to and worsen heart, liver
and kidney disease, making
them more expensive and time-
consuming to treat. So, it’s in
your pet’s best interest — and
yours — to pay attention to their
dental health!
