Nature Conservancy
tool helps identify
ideal solar farm sites
in Georgia
The bright Southern sun
makes Georgia an appealing
place to build solar farms.
But the state is also home
to sensitive ecosystems and
species like the state reptile,
the gopher tortoise. “And
the habitat that the gopher
tortoise prefers is the same
habitat that solar developers
like. It’s flat land. It’s sandy,”
says Amy Gutierrez of The
Nature Conservancy.
Her team analyzed which
areas in Georgia could
meet the needs of solar
developers, with good
sunlight and proximity to
transmission lines.They
compared that information
to maps of critical habitat,
protected lands, and prime
farmland. And they put their
results into a free online tool.
It allows developers, natural
resource agencies, and
others to identify low-impact
locations for new solar farms.
And Gutierrez says the tool
finds plenty of them.
“We have an opportunity
here in Georgia, while we’re
still on the forefront of this,
to get these facilities sited
in the proper locations,” she
says.
She says the tool
demonstrates that it’s
possible to transition to
clean energy while also
protecting natural resources
and sensitive species like the
gopher tortoise.“There’s a lot
of land in Georgia, and it’s
possible,” she says. “We just
have to be proactive about
it.”

FROM THE FARM
“Time”
-Nancy Baker
I’ve worn a watch since I was gifted one in high school. It
was a silver Bulova lady’s watch. Beautiful, but short lived
being as I was such a tomboy. Before high school you’re a
kid and don’t need a watch, everyone tells you what time it
is. My dad would holler up the stairs every school day till we
graduated, “Manny, Moe & Jack! Up, up, up! I need to hear
some feet hit the floor!” Or “It’s time for church!” would
bring us girls running to get in the car, pantyhose streaming
from one hand, Sunday shoes in the other, hot curlers still in
our hair. Getting pantyhose on in the back of a nine-passen
ger station wagon was much easier than whatever discipline
would be handed out for missing church. “Time to get in the
car! Come on! Load up!” And that was me trying to get my kids to school on time. We
had two big dogs that loved to go for car rides, and they would join the rush out the door
and leap in the back of our Buick Roadmaster. Our cat Oreo figured something good must
be going on and joined the parade. He rode back and forth to school on the back of the
middle seat for almost a whole year.
We found out when the Bulova died that I check the time on average about every seven
minutes, ‘cause that’s how often I was pestering my co-worker with, “What time is it?”
(He had a crush on me and didn’t mind a bit.) Since college my watch has been a Timex.
Gold, big round face, large Arabic black numerals on a white face. As an adult with ADD,
numbers are still not my friend, so they need to be very easy to see. Even now I sometimes
can’t say what time it is, and if asked, will simply show you, my watch.
I’m pretty good at replacing the battery and band, so I can get about 15 years out of a
watch. I lost one once. Cleaned the house top to bottom; my go-to for finding things.
Cleaned out the car and my desk at work. No watch. Had to go buy another. When the
snow melted the following spring, I found the original watch buried in the dirt next to my
compost heap. And it was STILL TICKING! That’s a Timex for you.
Last night my husband and I were talking about how I feel that I don’t have enough time
in my day even though we’re retired. Of course, he mentioned my time-sucking Facebook
addiction, that I’m not 30 anymore, and that for the last 5 years I’ve hardly been able to
walk without a crutch, cane or walker. I am so grateful that I’m getting healthier, and I
don’t want to be 30 again. But I still need more time in my day. Anyone know of a recov
ery group for Facebook addicts?

Planning now for the
spring and summer with
perennials will save time
and expense in the future.
When selecting perennials
for your garden , always
remember how the sun and
shade affect your yard and
garden. This week, we will
explore a few more peren
nials that love the sun and
will do good in your gar
den.
Maximillian Sunflower is
a fun flower if you like sun
flowers, I call them happy
flowers, Maximillian is a
native flower that is eager
to please. All it needs is a
little loving and your gar
den has a flower for life. The
Maximillian is beloved by
birds and butterflies. It pro
duces a plethora of blooms,
each bright yellow florets
surrounding a brown center.
This plant would be gorgeous
in a native planned garden or
in a wildflower garden. This
flower loves the sun, deer
hate it. Pollinators LOVE it
and you can cut the flowers
to use in a fresh arrangement.
Just make sure the soil is well
drained and fertilize once a
year.
The Coneflower is a fun
flower that is easy peasy and
very pretty. One look at this
perennial and you will say “
WOW !!”. Coneflowers are
hardy once established and
will produce tons of blooms
if you give it a little water
and fertilizer. This plant is
drought tolerant. The flowers
come in a variety of hues of
coral, blush, yellow, laven
der, and salmon. The flowers
have a pleasant smell.This
flower is excellent in a cut
ting garden, mixed perennial
bed or in containers. It is deer
resistant and will bloom from
summer to early
fall. An added
bonus is that you
can dry cone-
flowers to use in
dried arrange
ments.Pollinators
love this flower.
Agapanthus is a
favorite of mine.
Agapanthus boasts plenty
of horticulture benefits.
The flowers start early
summer thru early fall.
The bloom spikes are tall
with a multitude of beauti
ful, wispy, fragrant flower
heads. The dark blue and
purple are the best varieties
for our area. I like the white
and variegated bloom Aga
panthus, but they do not
take any freezing temps.
This plant is a great addi
tion to any garden. The Ag
apanthus is a great attractor
of butterflies. This flower
can be used in cut flower
arrangements and is deer
resistant. It can tolerate full
or partial sun. As always,
join your local garden club
for a wealth of information
and fellowship.
