LADY GAMECOCKS
START STRONG IN
REGION PLAY
-Burton Kemp
Improving to an overall
record of 5-1 on the still
young season the Lady
Gamecock soccer team
of Terry Markovcic has
opened region play with
resounding 7-0 and 9-2 wins
over homestanding Metter
on February 8 and Portal on
February 18 respectively.
After another region contest
in Claxton on February 22,
Bryan County will be here
on February 25, and a trip to
Darien against MCA is on tap
for March 1. That will end
the first region round robin.
The region schedule will start
over on March 4 when Metter
comes here. Through action
last Friday SCHS and MCA
were each 2-0, Portal was
1-2, and everyone else was
winless.
The trip to Portal last Friday
matched the top two teams
from a year ago, both of
whom advanced to the state
quarterfinals. The match lost
a little of its luster when MCA
defeated the Lady Panthers
5-2 on February 8 and all of
its luster last Friday when the
Red and White put the ball in
the net four times in an eight
minute span of the first half
and then four times in the first
ten minutes of the second
half. Portal actually led 1-0
after an early conversion of a
penalty kick.
In the game Emma Jones
and Shay Sasser had three
goals each with Gracie
Cataffo, Mazlin Blessing,
and Kaylin Long having one
apiece. Long also had an
assist and Julia Dews had
four saves.
On February 8 on the
artificial turf of Metter, the
Lady Gamecocks let the
Lady Tigers hang around
for a very, very long time.
Jones’ goal at the 31:08 mark
of the first half was the only
score by either team in the
opening 40 minutes. Junior
Adairis Gomez got an assist
on the goal. For Markovcic
the half and the early part
of the second half were
especially frustrating as his
troops dominated the game
and time of possession but
could not put the ball in the
net. Blessing scored a minute
into the second half and it
was truly all SCHS after that.
Off an assist by Blessing,
Sasser scored with 25:11
remaining in the game and
the floodgates then opened.
In the final 20 minutes
Blessing had another, Sasser
another, Jones another, and
Long added one. Long had
an assist as did Powell. The
Lady Gamecocks outshot
their hosts 20-6 and Dews
had five saves.
After having to come from
behind late to defeat the
Lady Trojans of Johnson
County on February 1, not
scoring until the later stages
of the second half, the Lady
Gamecocks took a 1-0 lead in
Wrightsville with 38:48 still
on the first half clock. Junior
Madison Powell hit the net
off a JoCo kick. Jones scored
the first of her three goals at
the 23:04 mark, taking an
assist from Long. The second
half was all Red and White
and someone named Emma
scored three times. Jones
scored twice more before
freshman Emma Warren used
a comer kick from senior
Rhianna Boddiford to finish
the scoring. Dews picked up
three saves.
Last week Eurosports ranked
SCHS sixth in the state in
Class A.

BASEBALL FINISHES A
BUSY FIRST WEEK AT 2-2
-Burton Kemp
With three of its four
games being decided by
a single ran, the SCHS
baseball Gamecocks of Jim
Randall Doyle went 2-2 in
those four, unfortunately
both losses came in one run
games. All four first week
games were against Class
AA competition. The busy
early schedule continues
this week with home games
on February 24 against
Jefferson County and
February 25 against Toombs
County. Next Tuesday there
is a trip to East Laurens and
a trip to Jefferson County
on Wednesday. Region play
starts on March 8.
The Roosters made the
short trip to Swainsboro
on Saturday and made a
day of it in the Swainsboro
Citizen’s Bank Diamond
Day playing a pair of games
whose starting times were
separated by a few hours. In
the first game there was a 5-4
loss to the host Tigers and in
their second game there was
a 10-9 win over Washington
County.
Coming on the heels of
back to back one run losses
against Toombs County
and the Saturday morning
loss to Swainsboro, the win
over WaCo was especially
gratifying to Doyle and his
players. The tension was thick
at the end with TJ Melvin
pitching and the tying run
on third with two outs in the
seventh. The situation came
after the Hawks had moved
within a run after trailing
10-7 at the innings outset. A
1-3 play ended the threat and
the game with Melvin taking
the win.
A 13-hit attack paced
the Rooster attack against
WaCo. Jake Pollock and
Ryan Warren each banged out
three hits while Jared Dixon
and Elijah Williams had two
each. Dixon had four rbi and
Warren had two. Gatlin Scott
pitched into the fifth before
being relieved by Melvin.
The Gamecocks actually fell
behind in the top of the fifth
before coming back to take
the lead for good in the home
half of the fifth. BJ Carver
scored the final go ahead run
on a single by Dixon.
The morning contest against
the homestanding Tigers saw
SCHS pick up but five hits in
their loss. A three run top of
the fourth actually gave the
Gamecocks the lead but that
lead did not survive the home
fourth as three walks and a hit
batter combined to give SHS
three runs without getting the
ball out of the infield. The
Tigers scored no more and
the Roosters picked up a
run in the seventh and had
the tying run at third when
it ended. Warren had two
hits and Melvin had two rbi.
Ren Brower started and went
the first three. Xander Kile
entered in the fourth and was
relieved by Melvin.
East Laurens became the
perfect opponent for the
season-opener/home opener
combined on F ebruary 15 as
the Roosters scored 11 runs
on just four hits, ten runs,
and five errors in just four at
bats. Ren Brower went the
first three allowing two hits
and no runs and Gatlin Scott
went the final two, striking
out four and allowing no
earned runs. No Gamecocks
had multiple hits. Jake
Pollock, Jared Dixon, and
Elijah Williams scored two
runs each.
Toombs County, a AA
playoff team from a season
ago hosted the Gamecocks
on February 17. In a game
that saw SCHS have leads of
2-0, 3-2, and 6-3 the ending
saw the Bulldogs claim a
walk off 7-6 win. Pollock
and BJ Carver had rbi in the
second and Carver had two
more in the fifth. Williams
started with Pollock entering
in the third and pitching
through the sixth. Connor
Thompson started the
seventh. Carver had three
hits and Pollock two.
