This afternoon there is a contest in Brooklet with AAA Southeast Bulloch’s Yellow Jackets beginning at 5:30. Next week’s region series will have Portal here on Tuesday, March 15 for a scheduled junior varsity/varsity double header beginning at 4:00 and the same scenario in Portal on Thursday, March 17. SEB will be here between the games on March 16. Last week’s games saw a 17-1 win over the Falcons of East Laurens in East Dublin and an 11-1 loss to visiting Jefferson County the following night. Virtually from start to finish the contest with East Laurens was a nightmare to watch for fans and in the later innings of the game, so too was the Jeffco affair. Against the F alcons the Gamecocks recorded eight hits, were the recipients of 11 walks, were hit by pitch four times, and got on via error four times. The first three innings of the five inning contest took nearly three hours with dropping temperatures. Out 166 pitches Fal cons pitchers were able to throw but 79 strikes. Connor Thompson and Ren Brower had two hits each, Jared Dixon picked up three walks while Ryan Warren drew two with Jake Pollock having a walk and being hit by a pitch as were Bryant Scott and TJ Melvin. Fifteen players batted and ten scored runs. Melvin (2-0, 2.03) went the distance on the mound allowing four hits and a walk while striking out ten. Things were not so rosy back at home on March 2. Recording but four hits there was only one walk and two batters to reach on errors against the Warrior staff. Only in one inning did SCHS put more than one runner on base. Three times a runner reached third with only the one in the seventh, with the score at 11-0, scoring. At that point Warren led off with a double, reached third on a wild pitch, and scored on a ground out by Thompson. In the first, with the game scoreless, the Roosters placed runners on second and third with one out but could not score. Freshman Gatlin Scott (0-1, 4.01) was effective for four innings, allowing a single earned mn. Things turned around in the fifth when Jeffco broke the game open. Brower also pitched in the fifth with Danny Thompson and Elijah Williams handling the seventh. Hoping to regain the norm of competing for a region title year in and year out, the SCHS track teams will open their 2022 schedule tomorrow, March 10, in Metter. Gamecock Coach Roy Cooper and Lady Gamecock Coach Chelsea Taylor have been readying their teams, both of whose progress was slowed by basketball success. According to Taylor, “I have a great group of girls this year, a totally different dynamic. In the past, I used my distance girls to carry this team; however, this year we have tons of speed. The 4x1 team went to state last year, but the current team this year is already running a faster time.” Said Cooper, “Boys track is returning most of its participants from last year with some new faces added, most of them are freshmen with a couple of tenth graders.” For the Lady Gamecocks the leader among the veterans is junior Ta’miyah Tyler. The First Team All Region basketball player finished second in the triple jump at last season’s Region 3 A meet while behind her is senior Morgan Caslin, third in 3 A in the 200 hurdles. Both advanced to the state finals. Senior Destiny Sanders was also part of the relay team that went to state. For the Gamecocks there is a pair of returning state qualifiers, senior Michael Boyd (a First Team All State football player) second in 3A in the shot, and sophomore Jayden Adams, third in the region in the 3200. Senior Ty Lanier, absent from the program returns after a First Team All Region basketball season. He advanced to the state in the high jump in the past. Taylor singled out freshmen standouts as Olivia Jackson in the 100, 200, and long jump and Jamya Dockery in the 400 and 300 hurdles. Other team members are senior Ana Dias, juniors Nia Scott and Amber Moore, sophomores Alailah Scott, Gabby Jackson, Ashley Langley, Alaysia Stewart, and Caitlyn Gordon. The remainder of Cooper’s roster shows senior Timothy Frank (100), juniors Jeremiah Burns and Justin Smith, sophomores Ian Hill, Jeremiah Hill, David McFarland, and Sam Robbins, and freshmen AJ Beths, Jordan Gresham, Jeffery Minor, and Miyon Fulcher. To arrive at 2-6 the Red and White fell twice on Saturday in the Veterans/ Bleckley County Middle Georgia Tennis Tournament in Warner Robins. After the extremely tough early schedule against all schools in higher classifica tions, the Roosters will drop down to the less than rigorous schedule that is 3A. On Tues day SCHS went to Millen to open region play with Jenkins County before hosting Metter this March 9 afternoon. The Gamecocks will host Calvary (who will also play Aquinas) on March 11, Aquinas (who will also play St. Vincent’s) on March 14, region foe Claxton on March 15, and region foe Bryan County on March 16. Five games in six school days including the last four at home. Avenging an earlier loss, the now-with-their-regular- lineup Gamecocks opened their participation in the Veterans/Bleckley County Middle Georgia Tournament on March 4 with an excit ing 3-2 win over AAA SEB. On February 8 SCHS lost to the Jackets 4-1. After split ting at the first matches with Thomas Milner winning 6-2, 6-1 and the second doubles of Zach Thompson/Jeremiah Stuart losing 2-6, 2-6, the other three matches finished within ten minutes of each other and the last two off went to a third set tiebreaker. Mason Forehand got a win at 7-6 (4), 6-4 before River Reynolds/ John Boswell held out for a 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 win. After the fact Atticus Lee fell 6-2, 4-6, 8-10. Saturday was a long day at the Houston County Tennis Center for SCHS and pro duced a pair of losses, 4-1 to powerhouse Bleckley County and 3-2 to Early County, the latter in the battle for third place. The morning affair with tournament host Bleck ley County’s Warriors went as many would have expect ed. Forehand got the team’s lone win at 6-1, 6-1. Other wise it was Lee (1-6, 2-6), Milner (2-6, 5-7), Reynolds/ Boswell (3-6, 7-5, 4-10), and Thompson/ Stuart (3-6, 4-6) each losing The Saturday nightcap was closer with a match at second doubles that could have gone either way. Winning were Forehand (6-1, 3-4, forfeit) and Reynolds/Boswell (7-5, 6-4) while losing were Lee (0-6, 1-6), Milner (2-6, 4-6), and Thompson/ Stuart (3-6, 4-6). Last week started with a pair of polar opposite match es, one against AAA Burke County and the other against AAAAAA Effingham County the next day. Monday saw an easy win over homestanding Burke County as Lee (8-1), Milner (8-2), Reynolds/Bo swell (8-1), and Thompson/ Stuart (8-4) picked up wins with Forehand (7-9) losing. On Tuesday there was a one sided 5-0 loss to the Rebels. Lee (0-6, 2-6), Milner (4- 6, 6-0, 2-6), Forehand (2-6, 2- 6), Reynolds/ Boswell (1-6, 3- 6), and Thompson/ Stuart (0-6, 3-6) all lost. SCMS baseball was also scheduled to play a pair of games last week, one in Springfield at Effingham County and the other at home against South Effingham. Neither opponent is in the local League. No information was available on the contests but the team opened region play on Monday when Toombs County was here and continues today with a trip to Lyons to face Toombs this March 9 afternoon. In Lyons on February 28 SCMS trailed at halftime 2-0 but dominated the second half to claim a 3-2 win. Anna Kate Withrow had two goals in the early second half. The tying goal came off a comer kick by Annaston Dotschay. When Withrow was fouled in the box Sadie Bell Sell drilled the PK with roughly six minutes remaining in the contest. Caro line Kullberg had five saves. Hosting Claxton at Kelly Memorial Stadium on March 2 SCMS took no time in establishing their superiority when Peyton Lee took an assist from Madison Mitchell had scored less than two minutes into the game. The combo reversed on the next two goals with Mitchell scoring off assists from Lee. Lee’s second goal made the halftime count 4-0. In the second half Mica Shipes scored and then got credit for a Claxton own goal. Mya Jakeila scored the final goal. Claxton managed but one shot with Kullberg getting a save on it. \£ 1 1/1 K V H □ E n X 3 V r E c * 1 V n X E e E 2 X ,V, V X E * V A \A V D 1 VN G B n X n IN V I/I D E r V What’s Going on in 4-H?
