“All-Time Assists Leader”
Our church is currently in
the middle of our Upward
basketball season. Every
year it is a joy to watch
players and teams improve
over the course of the sea
son. The improvement that
our volunteers love to see
most is the change in ori
entation from “self’ to
“team”. I recently spoke to
two of our middle school
aged teams about one of
Upwards primary aims -
teaching the concept of
Christlikeness. In fact, Up
ward has a reward system
of stars given to players,
and one of the stars is the
white star which represents
a Christ-like attitude. What
does it mean to be Christ-
like?
Karl Malone and John
Stockton were the two
stars of the Utah Jazz when
I grew up watching the
NBA. To this day, their
names remain synonymous
in my mind because of their
combined contribution to
their team. Karl Malone is
the all-time leading scorer
for the Utah Jazz franchise
with 36,374 points. John
Stockton is famous for
something else, and is an
Pastor Joshua Johnson
Oak Hill Church
NBA Hall of Famer, even
though he wasn’t even the
leading scorer on his own
team. John Stockton is in
the Hall of Fame today be
cause he is the NBA’s all-
time leader in assists with
15,806. John Stockton was
a great teammate.
The night before Jesus was
crucified, He had a final din
ner with His 12 disciples
in the upper room. Do you
know what the 12 did while
they were sitting around
that table? They argued
about who was the greatest.
Do you know how Jesus re
sponded to their argument?
He didn’t stand up and
rebuke them, but instead
wrapped a towel around His
waist and He washed their
feet. In a culture where ev
eryone wore sandals and
walked everywhere on dirt
roads, feet were gross! The
lowest slave in the house
was the foot washer. Jesus
demonstrated to His men
what a servant does - He
served them.
In basketball, there is a
word for serving others - that
word is “assist”. An assist is
a pass that directly results
in your teammate scoring a
basket. Instead of scoring,
you pass and your teammate
scores instead. John Stock
ton’s teammates scored
15,806 times because he
served them. Christlike
ness is having the attitude
of Jesus Christ. What was
Jesus’ attitude? Jesus said,
“I am among you as one
who serves” (Luke 22:27).
Jesus’ attitude was that of
a servant.
My challenge to you
today is to go and serve
others like Jesus. Are you
willing to take the lowest
place? Can you take out
the trash, sweep the floor,
clean the bathroom? What
can you do this next week
to make your teammates
great - your spouse, your
family, your co-workers?
How can you wash their
feet? Look for ways to
get assists and make those
around you be great!
Let’s pray, “Thank you
Jesus for being a servant
to us. Please give us a
servant’s heart and atti
tude and teach us how to
serve like you. Help us to
look for ways this week to
make our teammates great.
May you be glorified by
our service and may peo
ple be impressed with you
Jesus and not me! In Jesus’
name, Amen.”
