Words of Encouragement
“His Workmanship”
Michelangelo was one of the
greatest artists of the Renais
sance. He is famous for His
painting on the ceiling of the
Sistine Chapel, but he was
also an accomplished sculp
tor, sculpting the famous stat
ue, David. I read that Michel
angelo was once asked about
the inspiration for one of his
sculptures and replied, “I saw
the angel in the marble and I
carved until I set him free.”
Michelangelo is famous for
his workmanship, the art that
he created from his skilled
mind and hands.
Ephesians 2:10 tells me
that I am God’s workman
ship, created in Jesus for
good works. God is a far
greater and more skilled art
ist than Michelangelo, and
he is working in me and on
me, through Jesus, to make
me what I should be. I am a
work in progress. Maybe you
need to be reminded of that
today - that you’re a work in
progress in Jesus, and God is
working to make you what
you will be.
In my home time, there is a
house that is constantly under
construction. Every time I
see it. I’m still surprised that
it's not finished. I bet some
Pastor Joshua Johnson

neighbors even think it's an
eye sore because of its con
stant incomplete state. God
doesn’t view us like I see
that house - and incomplete,
messy, unfinished work.
In Jesus, God sees us as ac
cepted and loved sons and
daughters. How do I know
this? God tells me in His
word that when I put my faith
in Jesus, I am now found in
Jesus - His life is now my
life. His perfect sinless life
has been applied to me, God
now sees Jesus in me. When
Jesus was baptized God de
clared publicly from Heaven,
“This is my son, whom I
love and am pleased with.”
Before Jesus began His pub
lic ministry, before He ever
preached a message, taught
in a synagogue, called the
first disciple, or performed
any miracle, God declared
His love and pleasure for Je
sus. God’s love for His sons
and daughters is not earned,
it is freely given and freely
received. Employees earn,
but a son receives. I am not
God’s workmanship because
He has to, but because He
delights in making me more
like Jesus.
One last thing about the
working of God in my life
- Michelangelo works from
the outside in, but God
works from the inside out.
Michelangelo would start
with a block of marble and
chisel away the excess,
working his way in. God
works from within my
heart, and as He changes
my heart, the outside of me
changes too - my speech,
my demeanor, my actions,
my character, all change as
my heart changes.
Are you God’s workman
ship? Two types of work
are important for us to
consider - salvation and
sanctification. Salvation is
the work of God to bring
us to a place of surrender
in faith to Jesus. In Rev
elation 3:20, Jesus says
“Behold I stand at the door
and knock , if any man
opens the door I will come
in to him and eat with him,
and he with me.” God
might be working in your
life now, knocking on your
heart, moving you to open
the door to Jesus. Sanctifi
cation is the work of God
to make us more like Jesus
- it takes place after sal
vation and it is a lifelong
work. Philippians 2:3 says,
“for it is God who works

This was not good enough for

Danielle’s affinity for the
