After winning the region title on March 25 by owning all possible tiebreakers, the Red and White claimed the title outright with the win on March 29 at Kelly Memorial Stadium. Their second consecutive 3A title secured, the team must now wait until April 12 to leam who they play in their April 18 state playoff contest, which will be at SCHS. After the conclusion of region action last week the final region standings showed SCHS at 9-1 (13-2 overall), Claxton at 7-3 (9-6 overall), MCA at 7-3 (12-3 overall), Metter at 5-5 (5-7 overall), Portal at 2-8 (2-10 overall) and Bryan County at 0-10 (1-14 overall). Claxton owns the tiebreaker over MCA to claim second place. Some teams had nonregion games this week. Like the Lady Gamecocks, all 3A playoff teams have a bye into the second round of the playoffs by virtue of Region 1A having no girls soccer teams. After a sluggish offensive week the previous week, the Lady Gamecocks started the Portal contest slowly too, not scoring until the 20:29 mark of the first half. F reshman Kaylin Long sprinted past a quartet of Lady Panther defenders after a long pass from junior A d a i r i s Gomez and scored the first of her four goals. The super hat trick represented her second of the season. She scored one more in the first half and two more in the second half. Juniors Madison Powell and Bella Maust also got in the second half action as well. Shay Sasser had an assist on one of Long’s goals. Portal managed but two shots with Julia Dews picking up a save on one. BASEBALL DROPS PAIR TO ECI -Burton Kemp The SCHS baseball Gamecocks lost a pair of winnable games last week, dropping a 3-1 pitcher’s duel in Twin City on March 29 and losing a big lead late 14-7 on April 1. The April Fools’ Day contest was originally scheduled for the pre vious day but was rained out. This week the Roosters were scheduled to host Claxton yesterday and are scheduled to travel to the Evans County seat tomorrow. For the Red and White to make a run at the state playoffs after missing a year ago, things are already getting late early. Head ing into this week’s action the standings were defending state champion Metter already clearly out in front at 7-0, Bryan County at 5-3, ECI at 5-3, Jenkins County at 5-3, Claxton at 4-3, MCA at 3-5, SCHS at 2-6, and Portal at 0-8. The series this week are ECI-Portal, Bryan County-Metter, Portal-ECI, and SCHS-Claxton. An extremely well played game on March 29 saw pitchers Ren Brower (1-3, 4.03) andTJ Melvin combine to allow eight hits, strike out eight, and walk but three keeping ECI’s Bull dogs pretty much at bay, but get no offensive help. ECI got half of their eight hits in a three-run third that proved enough. The Gamecocks recorded but two hits (Bryan Scott and Mel vin) with Elijah Williams driving in Melvin for the lone mn in the fifth. Fourteen SCHS strikeouts prevented any sort of rally. The game marked the sixth time during the season the Gamecock batting order struck out more than ten times. In an extremely rare 1:00 start on Friday the Roosters jumped out quickly with five first inning runs. Jake Pollock reached on an error, BJ Carver walked, Scott singled in a run, Jared Dixon singled in a run, another mn scored when Elijah Williams reached on a fielder’s choice, and Gatlin Scott singled in two. SCHS upped their lead to 6-0 when courtesy mnner Hayden Skinner scored on a throwing error in the third. Starter Scott held the Bulldogs scoreless for four innings but could not get out of the fifth. ECI pushed across four in the fifth off Scott and Pollock (1-3, 4.55) and when the Gamecocks went three up and three down in their half of the fifth and the momentum totally shifted. The visitors put up six in the sixth off a trio of pitchers and four more in the seventh off another duo to pull away. Scott drove in a mn with a double in the sixth. The Red and White faced off with Statesboro, Swainsboro, ECI, and Appling County in their meet across the Ogeechee. Scheduled for here on April 14 are Met ter, Jenkins County, and ECI, all members of 3A. For another meet the Lady Gamecocks were led by freshman Olivia Jackson and the Game cocks by senior Ty La nier. The same teams played for the title last year with SCMS winning 4-3 on PKs. After a bye in the first round of the soccer playoffs, the Lady Gamecocks downed Toombs County 2-1 at Kelly Memorial Sta dium on March 30 in the region semifinals. SCMS led 2-0 after a brilliant first half and then hung on as they played into a 20+ mph wind in the second. While soccer was finishing its season in the championship match last Saturday, the SCMS baseball team was winning its way to a home game in the first round of its region tourna ment. The Game cocks will host an as-yet-undetermined team on April 12. The regular season ended on a five-game win ning streak including the final pair of 11-1 and 12-4 wins over Metter. In the 11-1 win Worth Brown had two rbi, a walk, and a run scored while Greyson Garvin went five innings with seven strike outs, allowing just four hits. On the season he has 26 Ks in 18 innings. The second game last week and the 12-4 win saw Brown with three hits and four rbi and Stone McBride with a pair of hits including a home mn and three rbi. Holland Zipperer got the win with Billy Williams finishing up. On March 28-29 the SCMS track teams participated in the South east Georgia Middle School Region Track Meet at Claxton in what was their lone reported meet of the entire season.
