Last Monday afternoon, a Screven County school bus was involved in an
accident with a fertilizer truck on Highway 301 at mile marker 11. Accord
ing to the Georgia State Patrol, the school bus was facing north on the east
shoulder of the roadway when the driver, Majella Robinson of Sylvania,
made an improper U-tum from the east shoulder to travel south, in the path
of the fertilizer truck driven by Jonathan Buie of Brooklet.
Robinson explained to investigators that she had been, “backing up at the
time of the crash after realizing she did not have sufficient clearance to
make the U-tum.”
Dr. Jim Thompson, superintendent of the Screven County Schools ex
plained, “thankfully, most of the injuries were minor and none were life-
threatening. I’m very thankful for the rapid, professional response from our
local emergency agencies and law enforcement.” As is standard procedure,
all the students were taken to Optim Medical Center Screven to be exam
ined. (photo by Sarah Saxon)
Meet County Commission Chairman Boyd

“Sure, we have to recruit
new industry, but we also
need to take care of what
we have,” Chairman Will
Boyd explains. Will is the
current face of District 4
and has been for the past
sixteen years. Thirteen of
those as Chairman of the
County Commission. “Our
job on the commission is
to set policy and let others
implement it. We have a good
group of people such as our
county manager, working for
the good of Screven County.”
Will and his wife, Wendy
are Screven County natives
and landowners in the com
munity, “I have raised my
four children here, I was
raised here, the only reason I
entered politics was to make
a difference in the com
munity I call home. I don’t
want Screven County to be a
metropolis. I want us to have
jobs, and to retain our young
people. My parents, Olin and
Laurice Boyd always taught
me to respect others, no mat
ter who you are. That’s some
thing I always try to do.”
Will admits the biggest
change he would like to
make in his next term such is
increasing the road budget. “I
also know there is a voice of
contention regarding meeting
times. We changed the meet
ing time to evenings, but we
had little public attendance.
Then we thought about stag
gering the meeting times every
other month, that would only get
confusing for everybody. The truth
is it won’t ever be convenient for

“The true heroes of the election
process are poll workers,” Hannah
Derriso, Screven County Elec
tions Supervisor explains. Unfor
tunately, there is an increasingly
short supply of poll workers across
the nation, and Screven County
is no exception. These unsung
heroes not only help to ensure that
family, friends, and the people in
their community have a meaning
ful voice in the democratic process,
but also help keep lines short,
assist voters in understanding the
process, and make sure the vot
ers’ experience is a pleasant one.
Voters with disabilities also rely
on poll workers to aid them with
voting whether reading instructions
to them, providing headphones for
the hearing impaired, or helping
elderly and disabled voters to the
front of the line.
“The election process is made
possible because ordinary people
step up to do the extraordinary

Screven County needs help with a major problem and asks
their citizens to address it. “The litter on our county road
ways needs attention. It’s every citizen’s moral and civic
duty to keep our county clean,” Dianne McMillan, execu
tive director of Keep Screven Beautiful explains.
With that in mind, April 30th has been designated as Keep
Screven Beautiful Clean-Up Day. “We are asking individu
als, families, organizations and churches to get involved
and help with this cleanup effort,” Dianne continues. “We
ask that you pick up littler in your area and then call and
report to us how many bags of trash you gathered. Let’s
take pictures and flood Facebook!”
Those residents living in Hiltonia, or Rocky Ford are
asked to contact Shannon at 912-829-3999. The Newington
area should contact Zandra at 912-690-1223 and the Sylva
nia area should contact Dianne at 912-978-1076.
Each area will have a meeting point where gloves, trash
bags, t-shirts, water, and goodie bags will be distributed.
Sylvania’s will be at the amphitheater, 105 S. Community
Dr. “The cleanup will be held from 9 a.m. - noon on April
30th,” Dianne says. If you have questions, please email
