GAMECOCK WRESTLING DUO IN SUMMER TOURNAMENT
-Burton Kemp
Rising juniors Jemiah
Stewart and Ryder
Rankin recently com
peted in the Spartan
Combat National Tour
nament in Jacksonville
FL. Stewart made the
most of the trip finish
ing second in the 18
and under heavyweight
brackets in the Folk-
style portion of the
tournament. Both wres
tlers were area runners-
up in their weight class
this past season.
According to SCHS
Head Coach Griffen
Greene, “Off-season
tournaments like this
one are the norm for the
top teams in high school
wrestling. Hopefully
we can send a few more
kids in the future.”
The event featured
tournament brackets in
two different types of
wrestling- Freestyle and
Folkstyle. Greene ex
plained that “Freestyle
strategy is different
from Folkstyle (what
the GHSA considers
high school wrestling)
in that scoring is cen
tered on takedowns and
back exposure. You are
allowed to lock your
hands around your op
ponent’s waist in an at
tempt to roll them, thus
exposing their back. In
Folkstyle, it is illegal to
lock hands around your
opponent’s waist as you
work to turn them from
the top position.”
Stewart entered both the
Freestyle tournament, as
well as the Folkstyle. In
his first ever experience
with Freestyle Stewart
went 1-2 but placed
second in the Folkstyle.
Rankin entered in the
138 bracket in Folk-
style. On his
way to the sec
ond place finish
Stewart lost to
a Florida wres
tler who won
the Freestyle,
Greco-Roman,
and Folkstyle
tournaments.

Parker wrestler
Cody Thompson served
as coach at the tourna
ment. In two seasons
at SCHS Stewart has a
career record of 57-40
and a pair of runner-
up finishes in Area 3 A
tournaments (2021 and
2022) while Rankin’s
career record is 44-33
and was fourth in area
in 2021 and runner up
in 2022.

Claiming second place in both the boys and girls
portions of the meet, the SCHS Gamecock and
Lady Gamecock track teams put together their
best performances of the season in their final
regular season meet. Held at the SCHS track, the
first meet on it all season long, the Red and White
did well for themselves in a meet with a trio of
other full teams in ECI, Jenkins County, and
Johnson County. The region meet is this week,
today and tomorrow (March 20-21) in Claxton.
As has been the case all season long the Game
cocks of Roy Cooper were led by senior Ty La
nier while the Lady Gamecocks of Chelsea Tay
lor were led by freshman Olivia Jackson. Lanier
had the top finish in the high jump (6’), the 100
(10.72), and the 200 (22.87) while going third in
the triple jump. Jackson won the 100 (12.05), the
200 (25.4), and was second in the long jump.

per’s troops with first place finishes in the long
jump (21-1 1 Vi) and the 110 hurdles (14.95).
Jay den Adams (3200, 13:26) and the first team
short relay (44.80) also gained gold. Other firsts
for the girls were Alailah Scott in the 100 hurdles
(18.55) and Amber Moore in the 800 (3.14).
Claiming seconds for the boys were Michael
Boyd (shot) and David McFarland (300 hurdles)
with Alaysia Stewart (400), Ashley Langley (800
and 1600), and the 4x4 relay team of Moore, Nia
Scott, Jamya Dockery, and Stewart doing it for
the girls. Finishing out the high placers were
Ta’miyah Tyler (3rd, triple jump), Dockery (3rd,
300 hurdles and the 400), AJ Beths (3rd, high
jump) and the 4x4 relay team (3rd).
ECI claimed first on the boys’ side with 74 to
the SCHS 69 while Johnson County had 42 and
Jenkins County had 35. It was Jenkins County

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL OUSTED IN SEMIS
■Burton Kemp
After starting the season
back in February and
finding themselves at 0-6
three weeks later, the SCMS
baseball Gamecocks rallied
to win six straight as they
advanced to the region
semifinals before falling
to Metter 5-3 just a game
short of the championship
contest. “I told our
players one game will not
define who they are as
players,” Head Coach Chad
Smallman said afterwards.
“I expect these players to
move onto high school
and do great things. I look
forward to watching these
guys for the next few years.”
To reach the semis the
Gamecocks downed visiting
North Tattnall 14-4 in
five innings with Greyson
Garvin going the distance
with a three-hit, 10 strikeout
performance. Garvin finished
the season with 36 Ks in 23
innings and a 3.35 ERA.
Offensively Slate Thompson
finished at .472 (17-36)
followed by Bryson Scott at
.360 (9-25), Billy Williams
at .333 (11-33), and Stone
McBride at .323 (10-31).
