The official opening of the newly constructed tennis
courts was held on Tuesday, April 19 at the Screven
County Recreation Complex. The recreation staff would
like to thank all of the Screven County Commissioners
and the County Manager for their continued support of
recreation in Screven County.
These courts are now open to the public for tennis and
pickle ball. Stop by the recreation office to inquire about
equipment, if needed. The recreation staff is very grateful
for this new addition to the complex. Pictured are:

BASEBALL’S FINAL WEEK

Screven County and Jenkins County traded outcomes in pitcher’s duels
last week in the final two region contests for each team. SCHS claimed a
3-2 win in Sylvania on the 19th while JCHS claimed a 3-1 win in the season
finale in Millen last Friday. The Roosters finished another disappointing
year at 7-17, 3-11 in Region 3Aplay and bid adieu to six seniors who were
honored in their final home game. After making the playoffs every season
save one 2007-2018, the Red and White have now missed post season the
past three completed seasons.
The win over JCHS on senior night saw all six seniors start and play the
entire contest with senior Ren Brower (2-4, 4.33) and senior TJ Melvin (2-
2, 3.55) combining for a seven hitter. Brower pitched into the fifth for the
win and Melvin the final 2.1 for the save. Seniors Elijah Williams, Bryant
Scott, and Danny Thompson had third inning rbi, the former pair on singles
and the latter on a bases loaded walk. Williams had two hits.
In the final contest of the season the Gamecocks loaded the bases with one
out in both the first and second innings but ground ball double plays ended
each threat. Jenkins County got a run in the second and two unearned runs
in the third to go up 3-0. After six base runners in the first two innings
SCHS had six the rest of the way and finally scored a run on back to back
Eagle errors in the seventh. Senior Jared Dixon (0-2, 2.33) started and took
the loss and also had doubles in the third and fifth but was stranded on
second each time. Freshman Gatlin Scott entered on the mound in the third
and sophomore Rylan Robbins entered in the fourth.
Final Region 3 A standings showed Metter an unbelievable five games
ahead at 14-0 (21-5) with Claxton (12-12) and Bryan County (16-7) each
at 9-5. Claxton swept BCHS to gain second and the home field in the first
round of the state. ECI finished fourth at 8-6 (14-10) while Jenkins County
was 7-7 (10-16). Unlike a year ago when the SCHS win over JCHS cost the
Eagles a playoff spot, as ECI beat Jenkins twice the Gamecock win on 4/19
did not cost the spot. MCA was 6-8 (13-14), SCHS 3-11 (7-17), and Portal,
again, 0-14 (3-15-1). This Friday and Saturday Metter will host Pelham and
Claxton will host Seminole County. Bryan County will go to Pataula Char
ter and ECI will go to Baconton Charter.
Offensive numbers for the seasons do not belie the woes of the Game
cocks. With a final team batting average of .239 only one regular, Dixon
(.377, 26-69) hit above .300 and only two others, junior Jake Pollock (.254,
17-67) and freshman BJ Carver (16-63), hit above .250. Six regulars had
more strikeouts than hits and only 104 runs (4.3 rpg) were plated. Dixon
had 15 rbi, Pollock 12, and Bryant Scott 10. The pitching staff, with a team
ERA of 4.57, did a very creditable job. Gatlin Scott (0-3, 4.30) led
the way with 40 innings pitched followed by Brower (2-4, 4.33) in
32.1 innings, Melvin (2-2, 3.55) in 25.2 innings, and Pollock (1-
3, 4.33) in 20 innings pitched most of the innings. Each had very
respectable ERAs. Nearly 30% of the runs allowed by the quartet
were unearned. Williams and Ryan Warren had the other two wins
for SCHS.

Despite a pair of outstanding
individual performances, both
SCHS track teams, with but 25
players between them, finished
fifth from among the eight par
ticipating teams at the Region
3A track meet at Claxton High
School on April 20-21. A total
of 14 combined members (seven
boys and seven girls) of the two
teams will advance to the state
sectionals at Montgomery Coun
ty High School on May 7.
Gamecock senior Ty Lanier
won the 100 (11.21) and the 200

freshman Olivia Jackson won
the same two events (12.71 in
the 100) and (25.73 in the 200).
Jackson won the 200 by nearly
two seconds while Lanier won
the 100 by .35 (11.21 to 11.56)
over teammate Timothy Frank,
a fellow senior. Lanier was also
second in the high jump (6-2)
and was part of the fourth place
4x100 relay. Jackson was sev

3 A High Point Man Award.
Other very high finishes for
SCHS had Jayden Adams win
ning the 3200 (12:47.42) and
Jeremiah Bums second in the
110 hurdles. Bums, who was
also third in the long jump, lost
the hurdles 16.70 to 16.74. Ja-
mya Dockery was third in the
300 hurdles and Michael Boyd
was third in the shot.
Metter won both the boys and
girls region titles going away
with the Tigers winning 144-
118 over Claxton and the Lady
Tigers winning 142-125
over MCA. For their
fifths the Gamecocks to
taled 65 points with a 15
man roster and the Lady
Gamecocks 76 with but a
10 woman roster. At the
region meet point totals
awarded are first-10, sec-
ond-8, third-6, fourth-5,
fifth-4, sixth-3, sev-
enth-2, and eighth-1.
Other point winners for
the Lady Gamecocks
were Ta’myia Tyler (5th
triple jump, 5th 100
hurdles), Ashley Langley
(6th 1600), Gabby Jack-
son (6th shot), Alaysia
Stewart (5th 400), Am
ber Moore (6th 800),
Alailah Scott (4th 100
hurdles), the short relay
of Stewart, Tyler, Scott,
and Olivia (4th), and
the long relay of Moore,

Stewart (4th).
Other point winners
for the Gamecocks were
Frank (7th long jump),
AJ Beths (6th high
jump), and the short
relay of Beths, Frank,
Bums, and Lanier (4th).
All participants with a
fourth place finish or
better advance to the
Class A state sectionals
at Montgomery County
High School on May 7.
Nine Lady Gamecocks
and six Gamecocks ad
vance to the sectionals.
The relay teams will
have alternates as well.
Ty Lanier is off and on his way. The
senior claimed the Region 3A champion
ship last week in Claxton in both the 100
and 200 while getting second in the high
jump. Combined with his role on the
fourth place 4x100 relay, Lanier claimed
the award for 3A High Point Man. (photo
