“Life Hacks”
With the rise of social media, especially apps like TikTok
and Youtube, Life Hacks have become a popular atten
tion grabber. A Life Hack is a secret tip or trick that makes
an everyday task easier. Some Life Hacks are so mind-
blowing that they are posted with the phrase “I was today years old when I learned
this!” (If you want to stop reading for a moment and go check out some Life Hacks
on Youtube or TikTok, I won’t judge you!) Does the Bible have any Life Hacks for
the Christian’s life?
The short answer is no - there is no secret tip or trick that makes following Jesus
easier. The longer answer is that we sometimes miss out on a fulfilled life of obedi
ence because we make following Jesus too complicated. I think Christians sometimes
take an extreme view of following Jesus - if I don’t have the same impact that Billy
Graham did, then my walk with Jesus isn’t accomplishing anything. Even though we
may sometimes feel that way, that’s just not true.
1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 gives four very practical commands for Christians to obey
every day and lead a life of impact for Jesus. This scripture tells Christians to: 1)
love one another 2) lead a quiet life 3) mind your own business and 4) work as God
commanded you. The best thing about these four commands is that every Christian
can obey them and grow in them, daily.
“Love one another”. Paul writes in (v.9) “About brotherly love.. .love one another.”
The Bible teaches us to love fellow Christians. If we can’t love each other, how are
we supposed to love our neighbor, the world, our enemies, and those we don’t agree
with? Jesus said, “Everyone will know you are my disciples (you belong to me)
when you love one another” (John 13:35). How do we love one another? Choice and
sacrifice. I choose to love you, regardless of my feelings. I choose to sacrifice my
wants and desires, to put you first.
“Lead a quiet life.” We live busy lives, in a busy world. We have full weekly sched
ules. We have infinite options of entertainment and knowledge. You could spend an
hour on TikTok, just like that. Living a quiet life means making a conscious decision
to unplug, slow down, and choose quiet over entertainment, or the next scheduled
activity. I’m not advocating for us all to go live in a monastery! We do however, need
to practice more quiet and set aside more time and space for God in our busy lives.
Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” How can we know Him, if we
are never still?
“Mind your business”. Take care of your own life, because you have enough of your
own problems in it. It’s easier (and for some, more fun) to get involved in someone
else’s life, because their problems aren’t your problems! What God calls us to do as
Christians is to mind our own business - to look in the mirror and gaze long and hard
at the imperfections we see there, to get my house in order, and my room ready for
inspection. Jesus said, “Before you take the speck out of your brother’s eye, take the
log out of your own” (Matthew 7:3).
“Work with your own hands.” God commands us to work - “If a man is unwilling to
work, he shouldn’t eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10). God gave Adam a job to do in the
beginning, he was to tend the Garden of Eden and keep it. Work is not a result of
sin - work was good before sin entered the world, sin has just made it hard work. The
Bible’s teaching here is to do the work that God had given to you. Whatever job God
has given to you, do it with integrity, honesty, and love in your heart toward others
and Jesus. Also, remember to do the work! We sometimes fall into the trap of expect-
