Parents picking up their elementary students
were privy to an arrest being made while they
patiently waited for their little ones to leave
school. Last Wednesday at approximately 3
p.m., Sylvania Police officers were dispatched
to Frontage Road, in front of the Screven
County Elementary School, in response to an
accident.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a 2019
Dodge Charger with its front bumper in con
tact with the rear bumper of a Chevrolet Sil
verado pickup. Officers asked the driver of the
Charger, identified as Hazel Royal of Newing
ton, to please back her vehicle away from the
pickup. At that time Royal complied and then
driving the vehicle back into the Silverado, narrowly missing the police officer.
The officer then requested Royal to put the Charger in park and exit the vehicle. The of
ficer observed Royal unable to walk without assistance and slurred speech. A strong odor of
alcohol was emitting from her person.
When asked if she was in line to pickup children. Royal stated that she was. Upon further
questioning. Royal explained that she had consumed a “couple” of alcoholic drinks. Royal
registered . 157 on the alcosensor and an almost empty bottle of tequila was lying next to the
driver’s seat. Royal became belligerent when taken into custody as she kicked the patrol car
door. Royal was transported to the Screven County Jail, (photo contributed)

Screven Christian Academy holds Gala
-Jake Gay
Sylvania Times Reporter
The Screven Christian Academy held the 2nd An
nual Denim and Pearl Gala at Quarter Oaks Farm.
All proceeds from the fund raiser went towards the
construction of an addition to the school, making
them that much closer to reaching the goal of a K-12
school.
Headmaster Heidi Mixon greeted the guests, “this
year we have 168 students and next year we antici
pate 189. We want to thank one of our local churches
for the donation of a passenger van. Now our players
can be transported to the games rather than parents driving them.”
In addition to a silent auction, the school gave away over $5k in cash drawings as well as live entertainment
by a Statesboro band, The Ridley’s.
“We would like to thank everyone involved with making this gala a huge success. Thank you to Fisheye Grill
for the food and most importantly to our students and parents for all their hard work. Thank you also to the
citizens of Screven County for your generosity.” Mixon concluded, (photo by D. Hearn)
