I have had others ask me that question, and I have asked that question to God. Sometimes it seems like our prayers arent going any farther than the roof. Can I tell you something though? God always hears His people’s prayers, sometimes He’s just listen ing in silence. At a very dark time in Israel’s history, a man named Asaph wrote this prayer to God, “Lord God of Armies, how long will you be angry with Your people’s prayers? You have fed them the bread of tears and gave them a full measure of tears to drink” (Psalm 80:4-5). Asaph lived during the time when Jerusalem was destroyed by Babylon. The best and brightest young Jews were taken as captives to Babylon, and those that were left in Je rusalem were either killed or left destitute, as slaves to Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon. It seemed like God had completely abandoned His people, Israel. No matter how hard His people prayed, God did not deliver Israel from Babylon. So, Asaph re corded his heart and Israel’s heart in Psalms 73-83, and he is very real and raw as he writes out his prayers to God. In the text I quoted above, Asaph asks God why He has rejected Israel’s prayers - God, why aren’t You answering our prayers? God wasn’t answering Israel’s prayers like they wanted Him to, but He was listening, and He was working. The very fact that Asaph’s psalms made it into the Bible proves to us that God was listening. When we pray, we must pray in faith - that God is listening, even if He may be listening in silence. God was also working during this terrible time for Israel. How was God working? God had warned His people through the ministries of the prophets Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah that judgment would come from Him if Israel didn’t repent of their sin and turn from their wickedness back to God. Israel chose not to repent, so God brought judgment in the form of Babylon’s destruction of Jerusalem. Even though Jerusalem was destroyed, God promised through the prophet Jeremiah that He would bring back Israel and rebuild Jerusalem after 70 years of captivity. Asaph’s and Israel’s prayers didn’t line up with God’s will and plans, so to them it seemed like God wasn’t listening. It takes faith to believe that God is listening and work ing! Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith is the reality of what is hoped for and the proof of what is not seen.” Faith is believing what we can’t see, or feel, or what might be the exact opposite of the circumstances we may currently find ourselves in. Our senses, feelings, and circumstances can convince us of things that are not true - like God is not listen ing, or is not active in our lives, just because we don’t notice it. When I pray and God doesn’t answer, I must believe that He’s listen ing and working - He just hasn’t answered yet! Let’s pray, “Father, thank you for giving us prayer so that we can speak to You and listen to You. Help us to have faith when we pray - to believe that You hear us, and You answer our prayers. Help us to have faith when we pray - that You will answer even if it takes longer that we think it should. Help us to have faith when we pray - so that our feelings, senses, and circumstances do not mislead us in how You are working in our lives. Help us to trust in Your will and Your plans.
