GAMECOCK
NETTERS FALL IN
STATE SEMIFINALS
-Burton Kemp
Seeking a second straight trip to the Class A state championship the SCHS tennis Gamecocks
came up short to the visiting Lake Oconee Academy Titans on the Screven County High School
tennis courts last Thursday afternoon. The final was 3-0 leaving the Roosters with a 13-10
record for the 2022 season. Lake Oconee, who defeated defending state champion Seminole
County and now last year’s runner-up SCHS in successive matches, will meet Telfair County
in the 2022 state championship match this Saturday at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry Col
lege. Telfair County was the state champion in 2019. There was no 2020 champion.
Lake Oconee Academy, far from the normal Class A public charter school, was in command
from the start. They won first games in four of the five individual matches and never looked
back at one singles, two singles, and one doubles. At three singles Mason Forehand split sets
with Garrett Payne at 6-2, 2-6 and led 1-0 in the third set. At number two doubles the team
of Zach Thompson and Jeremiah Stuart fell 4-6 in their first set to Noah Dominy and Justin
Zahler but rallied for a 5-2 second set lead. Both matches were pulled when the top doubles
team of River Reynolds and John Boswell finished a 2-6, 2-6 loss to Adam Kalmanowicz and
Noah Gessner. At one Attison Lee lost 1-6, 2-6 to Cooper Ciavola while Thomas Milner lost
1-6, 1-6 to Maddox Cantrell at two.
With a lineup that includes only a pair of seniors in Reynolds and Thompson the final records
show Lee at 10-10 all at number one, Milner at 16-7 with all but two matches at number two.
Forehand at 12-5 in singles at number three. Reynolds was 1-1 in singles while Boswell was
0-2. In doubles the top two teams had Reynolds/Boswell at 13-6 at number one and Thomp
son/Stuart at 9-6 at number two. Other teams were Stuart and Josh Patel at 1-0, Bowell and
Stuart at 1-0, Thompson and Patel at 0-3, and Bo Doss and Tucker Thomas at 0-2.
Falling in the semifinals after advancing to the finals in 2021 gives the boys their best back
to back seasons since the period 2002-2004 when the team advanced to the semifinals for
three consecutive seasons. Before that the team went to the Final Four in 1992 and was state
runner-up in 1993. Since that trip in 2004, when there actually was a Final Four in one place
on one day, the team had not won a quarterfinal match in order to advance to the semifinals.
Thursday marked the second consecutive season the SCHS tennis courts hosted a semifinal
tennis match as SCHS defeated Telfair County last season at a similar juncture. Since the
GHSAdid away with a central location for the semifinals and finals, SCHS has hosted a boys’
semifinal the past two and a girls’ semifinal in 2017, 2015, and 2013. Obviously this was the
first such match on the new courts.
