Words of Encouragement
Pastor Joshua Johnson
Oak Hill Church
66 Yes, He Gives!”
When I was a child, I remember reading one of Grimm’s
fairy tales called “The Elves and the Shoemaker.” Perhaps
you remember the story too. An old, poor shoemaker is worn
out and broke, but sets out his last scraps of leather to make
one pair of shoes the next morning. I looked up the fairytale to refresh my memory,
and at this point in the story it says, “With a good conscience, he lay down quietly in
his bed, commended himself to God, and fell asleep.” Make a note of that line - we’ll
come back to it later. When the shoemaker awakens the next morning, in the place of
the scraps of leather, he finds a pair of exquisitely made shoes! He sells that pair for an
excellent profit and buys leather for two pairs the next day. He goes to bed that night
and the next morning he finds two exquisite pairs of shoes. This goes on for a few days
until the shoemaker and his wife decide to sit up at night and find out what’s going on.
To their surprise, two elves arrive every night and work all night to finish the shoes!
So, what does a Grimm’s fairy tale have to do with the Bible? This fairytale is actually
a good example of Psalm 127:1-2 - Unless the Lord builds a house, its builders labor
over it in vain; unless the Lord watches over a city, the watchman stays alert in vain.
2 In vain you get up early and stay up late, working hard to have enough food— yes.
He gives such things to His loved ones while they sleep. God gives to His children,
while they are sleeping!
One more story, and then I will land the plane. In Mark 4:26-29 Jesus tells the story
of a farmer planting seed. Every day the farmer goes out and plants his seed, then he
goes inside and sleeps every night. Before long the seed sprouts and grows, “although
the farmer doesn’t know how.” The soil produced a crop by itself - it seems, but the
purpose of Jesus’ parable is in harmony with Psalm 127, while the farmer was sleeping,
God was working, giving him a good crop.
Here’s the takeaway - Yes, He gives! God is a gracious, giving Father. He gives good
things to his children while they sleep. God giving to me while I sleep is called GRACE.
God’s grace is when He gives me what I don’t deserve. We tend to take two extremes
when it comes to God’s grace - grace refusers and grace exploiters. Grace refusers say,
“I must earn it!” while grace exploiters say “Gimme, gimme, gimme.” God says grace
refusers must humble themselves and stop their vain labor, and grace exploiters are lazy.
So how should we receive God’s grace? Note the word vain in Psalm 127. God doesn't
say don’t labor, but don’t labor in vain. Good labor is when we do everything God places
in front of us for the day and then lie down and sleep, commending ourselves to God.
Vain labor is thinking that it all depends on me. If I work hard enough, if I do enough,
I can make it happen. Remember the shoemaker? “So in the evening, he cut out the
shoes which he wished to begin to make the next morning, and with a good conscience,
he lay down quietly in his bed, commended himself to God, and fell asleep.” He placed
his circumstances in God’s hands and slept peacefully.
God can do more in my sleeping, than I can do in my vain working!
Let’s pray, “Father, thank you for your grace that you freely give to me. Help me to do
the work that you’ve placed before me today, and to trust that You are working, even
while I’m sleeping. Thank you for giving to me! In Jesus’s name. Amen.”
(Author’s note —» God did not send elves to help the shoemaker! The Elves and the
Shoemaker is a fairytale - I’m only pointing out a spiritual truth found hidden in it,
whether it was placed there intentionally or accidentally.) Pastor Johnson is the minister
at Oak Hill Church.
