That's right, all these Superheroes were present at the first annual "Superheroes Family Day" at Screven County Elementary School on Thursday, May 5, 2022, from 3-6. Over 350 students and parents descended on the Elementary gym for an afternoon of fun and games! The event was hosted by the Screven County Community Collaborative, The Screven County Chamber of Commerce and Screven County El ementary School. Everywhere you turned there were games, book walks, skeet ball, large sorry game, tic tac toe, golfing, face painting, food, popcorn and so much more! It felt like an end of school carnival. “Our many thanks to the local businesses and indi viduals who helped make this such a great success,” Cathy Kight, Executive Director of the Screven County Community Collaborative explained. We would also like to thank our superheroes for taking time out of their busy crime fighting schedules to make this event a success.” (photos by Sam Eades) I was three years old when I first remember hearing the song "Happy Jubilee". I grew up in a Christian home with a family who loved to sing. We loved gospel music. Every Sunday morning I would wake up to the sound of The Goodman Family as they rang in the day of worship by singing, "Jubilee...Jubi lee...your invited to this happy jubilee". Along with the happy song, I would always smell the scent of bacon and eggs cooking on the stove along with home made biscuits of course. It truly was, the best of days! The Happy Good- mans were led by their oldest brother Howard (nicknamed “Happy”) in the early years. In 1949, Howard met Vestal Freeman, an aspir ing opera singer and sister of gospel tenor singer Cat Freeman. They were soon married. By 1962, the singing group fans most fondly remember as The Happy Goodmans had formed consisting of Howard, Vestal, Sam, and Rusty. Their younger brother Bobby was soon in the band as well play ing bass guitar. From that point in the early 1960s, the fame of The Happy Goodmans took off like a rocket. On the final chord of a song when everyone else was sustaining their note, Vestal would often hit a Face Painting: Bradley Rollins is having his face painted by Scout Black. Super Hero Skeet Ball: Helpers, Laura Mills, Kaden Williamson, Devanshi Patel, Erin Thompson. Playing Skeetball, Ryan Kite. Heavenly Kemp Oliver: Playing Golf with Batman Picture with Spiderman, Khaiden Middleton Emmett Ellis Roundtree: Playing Tic Tac Toe dissonant note and then resolve to her note in the chord with a curlicue flourish. Their style has been described as “grab a note and hang on.” In 1964, the Happy Goodman's joined the cast of The Gospel Singing Jubilee televi sion program which was syndicated in markets across the country. The theme song was "Happy Jubilee" written by Rev. Raymond Browning in 1932. Mr. Browning was a local pastor. He died in 1953. By 1974, The Happy Goodmans had signed a contract with concert promoter JG Whitfield guaranteeing them $2500.00 for each event and a minimum of 100 events for both 1974 and 1975. After the Jubilee, they launched a televi sion program of their own called The Happy Goodman Family Hour and later had another program called Down Home With The Happy Goodman Family.
