Summer Reading kicks
off with a carnival
The Farm

June is here, and you know
what that means - Sum
mer Reading is about to
begin! Our first event will
be our Kickoff Carnival,
with games, crafts, food and
prizes! It will be held at 10
am on Tuesday, June 7 and
it’s going to be a blast!
Don’t forget to sign up
for our Summer Reading
Program while you’re here,
either. You have two op
tions for how to keep track
of your reading this summer:
the traditional paper reading
log you can pick up at the
library, or Beanstack, our
online app that will not only
help you keep track of your
hours, but allows you to get
cool badges and participate
in fun contests with friends
and family, as well as earn
the same prizes as everyone
doing traditional reading
logs! If you’ve participated
in Beanstack before, you’re
ready to go, if this is your
first time trying it then you’ll
need to sign up. Either way,
head over to sjrls.beanstack.
org to get in on the fun!
Whether you’re using
the paper reading logs or
Beanstack, you’ll earn prizes
for every 5 hours that you’ve
read (or, for infants and tod
dlers, every 5 books that are
read to you). Plus, for every
5 hours read or library event
attended, you’ll be eligible
for our weekly drawing!
Every Saturday during Sum
mer Reading, starting on
Saturday, June 11, we will be
drawing names for one child,
one teen, and one adult for
some great prizes!
Next Tuesday, June 14 at
10 am we will be getting a
visit by our heroes in blue
and their K-9 buddy! Come
leam how this very good dog
helps to keep us safe from
bad guys!
Every Wednesday at 10 am,
starting on June 8, we will
have a fun craft time in the
library. Come in and make
some of the creative crafts
that aren’t so easy to tuck
into a bag and take home!
But don’t worry, we’ll still
be offering our super-popular
Crafts To Go every week!

all the wonderful things hap
pening at the library, head

Well, that’s all for now - see
you at the library!
I used to be a morning per
son. My mother told me that
I woke up at 6 am from the
day I was bom. For as long
as I can remember my eyes
would pop open and my day
would be planned before I
even finished bmshing my
teeth. But for the last few
years it’s been taking longer
and longer to get my eyes
open, and then it takes 30
minutes and two cups of
coffee to get my brain online.
However last Monday I was
invited to go horseback rid
ing, leaving the bam at 8 AM
sharp. You better believe I
was up, dressed, and chunk
ing feed to my crew at the
crack of dawn. I was jug
gling three scoops of feed on
the way to the pasture when I
saw something that made me
drop half of it on the ground.
The biggest, blackest wasp I
had ever seen was crawling
slowly through the grass. I
took a few steps towards
the house to get my phone,
and then realized I wouldn’t
make it. I spun around and
emptied a scoop of feed
thinking I could trap it un
der the scoop, but I missed.
It lumbered off and slowly
took to the air, flying about
18 inches off the ground. It
was about an inch and a half
long, thick waisted, solid
black with 2-3 yellow/white
inverted triangle markings on
its abdomen.
I ran to the house and
searched Google, adding
‘in Georgia’ at the end to
narrow the search. Imme
diately a picture of the Dou
ble -banded Scoliid Wasp
popped up. They are a digger
wasp. They find tunnels, in
which Scarab Beetles (Dung
Beetles) have laid eggs, dig
their way in and lay their own
eggs on the dung beetle larva.
Nobody seems to know just
how they find the tunnels.
The males have no stinger,
though they aggressively
defend territory during mat
ing season. The females can
sting, but probably won’t
unless you grab at them.
They are more interested in
immobilizing prey for their
babies.
Given that it’s just now sum
mer, I think this wasp had just
metamorphosed into its adult
form. They are great beetle
predators, immobilizing ap
proximately 30 grubs per
year. They can also prey on
the grubs of June Bugs and
Fig Eater Beetles (of which
we have more than a few!).

The adults eat flower nectar
and pollen, so they are also
pollinators.
Hubs and I have worked
to increase the biodiversity
in our comer of earth, and
it’s encouraging to see new
species showing up. Now
I have another interesting,
beneficial wasp to add to my
life-list, along with Golden
Digger Wasp and Cicada
Killer Wasp. Even though
I walk the property daily,
getting up early allowed me
to see a new denizen with
whom I share habitat, and
this makes me happy.
Who knows, I may revert to
being a morning person.
