Nells Bacon Roll Ups
Now, this receipe is from 1935. I know that your
family will love these as much as mine did. Of course
everyone loves bacon and this has always been a family treat. Very Deli
cious! Enjoy! Nell
Ingredients
cup finely chopped onion
tablespoon butter
3 cups cubed day-old bread
1/4 teaspoon celery salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 large egg, lightly beaten
10 bacon strips
In a small skillet, saute onion in butter
until tender. In a large bowl, combine the bread cubes, celery salt, garlic
powder, salt, pepper and onion mixture; toss to mix evenly. Add egg; toss
to coat bread cubes. Roll into ten 1-1/4-in. balls. Wrap a bacon strip around
each ball. Secure with a toothpick.
In a large skillet, cook bacon roll-ups on all sides over medium heat for
18 minutes or until bacon is crisp and a thermometer inserted into stuffing
reads at least 160°. Drain on paper towels. If you are having a party or
guests, you can place lettuce on the platter first. I always added a BBQ dip
for our family reunions.
Nells Baked Apple Pudding
This recipe was handed down to me from my Mother. This was the Sun
day dessert after the meal. I always looked forward to dinner on Sunday's.
Especially this dessert. I know you will love it as much as my family did.

Story 4
Eve, The Butcher Dog
Redeemed
Meet Eve. She is a lady dog; lady dogs are sometimes (just)
called... dogs (this is a kid-friendly article, get your mind out
of the gutter). She comes from a family of dogs called Rott
weilers that were bred
and trained to help
farmers and butchers
protect their cows and
their pigs and their
chickens, and also to
help take these ani
mals to market where
people called butchers
sell their animals. Eve
is a hero because she
pulled her paraplegic
mommy to a place where the ambulance could pick her up
after the truck they were driving crashed and before the truck
exploded.

You probably have heard of a
BYOB party. April brought
that tradition to the GRITS
Book Club with a bring-your-
own-book night at the library.
The floor opened for each
person to talk about a recent
read during the meeting.
The avid readers profiled
some books that have yet to
make the monthly discus
sion, but they enjoyed and
would recommend. There is
a variety of topics to choose
from. So, if you are looking
for something to take to the
beach or just to the recliner,
here is a list of titles:
-“The Seven Husbands of
Evelyn Hugo” by Taylor
Jenkins Reid (and her other
books, “Daisy Jones and the
Six” and “Maybe in Another
Life”)
-“People We Meet on Vaca-
by Kristin Harmel
-“The Butler” by Danielle
Steele
-“Turning Angels” by Greg
lies and its predecessor, “The
Quiet Game”
-“The Wom
en of Easter”
by Liz Curtis
Higgs
-“Westering
Women” by
Sandra Dallas
and her pre
vious book,
“Prayers for
Sale”
-“Virgil Wander” by Leif
Enger
-“Me Before You” by JoJo
Moyes
-“Queen’s Own” by Mer
cedes Lackey
-“The Life She Wished to
Live: A Biography of Ma-
jorie Kinnan Rawlings” by

-“The Stranger in the Life

-“The Midnight Library” by

The Screven County Garden Club held their April meeting at the Screven Agricultural Center.
Gloria Parker, Gus Bazemore and Jean Hagan served as hostesses. Twenty-one members and
2 visitors for a total of 23 in attendance. We welcomed new members Zandra Overstreet,
Ellen Hoel, Judy Morgan and Madison Thompson.
The meeting was called to order by President Joni
by Gus Bazemore. Joni Thompson awarded Susan
Ragains with a State Garden Club past president’s
pin in recognition of her years of service as president.
In addition, she presented her with an autographed
copy of Laura Martin’s book. Naturalist Book of
Wildflowers.
Joni Thompson attended the State Garden Club
Convention in Macon on April 12 and 13, 2022. It
was noted that there was a historic loss of Garden
Club members and clubs due to the pandemic. We
are delighted that our club has remained stable, and
we are gaining new members.
Gary Weaver presented a very informative program
on raising bees, harvesting honey, and transporting
bees to various states to take advantage of flower
blooms.
Horticultural Tip of the Month was a list of spring
gardening advice given by Zandra Overstreet.
Mary Lariscy won the door prize.
Neil Patterson and Raymond Moore, 406 North Main
Street have the Beauty Spot of the Month.
The May 2022 meeting will be held at the Cail Center on May 31, 2022, at 12:00 Noon.
