Early morning quake felt by few Hospital expanding services Joe Brady Editor A 3.9 magnitude earthquake hit our area early Saturday morning, at approximately 4 a.m. Researchers say this is the strongest in years. The U.S. Geological Survey noted the quake in the city of Stillmore, but the shocks were felt in Jenkins and Screven Counties due to the epicenter’s shallow location. The trembling was felt in parts of Atlanta, Augusta, Macon and even Savannah. ’ j Georgia Tech professor and Geophysicist Dr. Andrew Newman ^explained, “earthquakes of this magnitude cause slight damage.” No damage or injuries were reported over the weekend. Quakes of this magnitude tend to occur in Georgia about every 3-5 years, but usually in the northwestern region of the state. Dr. Newman stated, “the location of this quake is highly unusual.” Although minor, earthquakes in the coastal plain of Georgia are few and far between, they still have the potential to be destructive. Dr. Newman cites the 1886 Charleston earthquake, “that quake damaged 2,000 buildings and killed 60 people. Estimates have placed its magnitude between 6.9 and 7.3” The only two more powerful earthquakes than Saturday morning’s in our region in recent years was the 4.4 magnitude quake centered in Decatur, TN in December 2018 and the 4.1 quake near Edgefield, SC in 2014. Bay Branch hosts gospel sing Jake Gay Reporter Bay Branch Baptist Church hosted a gospel sing this past Sunday with Southern Gospel music evangelist Jason Runnels. Jason is no stranger to southern gospel, he was the tenor for ten years in the gospel group The Down East Boys. “I started out in 1998 with Tony Gore and Majesty. I had opportunities I otherwise would not have had with Tony. We performed in Ireland, Scotland, and England,’ Jason Runnels 1 Jason says. During this time, Jason also traveled with the Gaither Vocal Band. Jason explains that his role models was Guy Penrod and David Phelps. “The Lord does work in mysterious ways however because years later when I was filming an episode of Gaither and Friends, who was I sitting between? Guy Penrod and David Phelps!” After being on the road over 15 years. Runnels felt he should be with his family. Jason and his high school sweetheart, Theresa, have been married 28 years and have three sons. “I began another career with Chick-fil-A and thought that was God’s new direction for my life. But he had other plans,” Jason explains. Jason and his wife launched Jason Runnels Ministries in May 2013. He also became an ordained preacher and performs at revivals, homecoming services and conferences. “In August 2019, my youngest son Braden joined me and we formed The Runnels,” although Braden is a college student, he performs as much as he can with his dad. “Everything that has happened in my life I owe to the grace of our Lord and Savior. As long as I am spreading the love of God, I am doing what He wants of me.” Thank you Jason for sharing your talent with us.
