“Ambassador”
While John Adams is considered the first official ambassador appointed by
the United States Congress in 1785, the first “unofficial” ambassador of the
13 colonies was none other than Benjamin Franklin! Benjamin Franklin, one
of the largest personalities of the New World, was sent by the Continental
Congress to France, to represent their desire to enlist the support of the French
crown in the fight against the British. Franklin was wildly successful in his
pursuit of help, ultimately enlisting the French and helping turn the tide of
the Revolutionary War. The French loved Franklin, putting his image on coins
and jewelry, and even going so far as to adopt the fur cap he wore instead of a
traditional wig!
An ambassador is sent with one purpose only - to represent a higher power by
bringing a message to a people. An ambassador is chosen and sent - chosen by
an authority higher than themself and sent with a message to be delivered to a
group of people. Benjamin Franklin was chosen by the Continental Congress
to go to the King of France with one message - we need your help to defeat the
British. An ambassador is not in charge of developing the message, they are
only in charge of faithfully delivering the message.
In 1 Timothy 1:1, Paul writes that he is an “apostle of Christ Jesus”. Apostle
is a New Testament word for ambassador. The Greek word for Apostle used
in 1 Timothy 1:1 means “a sent royal ambassador” - a royal commissioning to
go and deliver a message. Paul is reminding Timothy, and the churches he is
leading in Ephesus that they are apostles, or ambassadors for Jesus. Paul and
Timothy had a message to deliver to the churches in Ephesus, and that message
was the Gospel - that God sent His son Jesus into the world to save sinners.
Paul was a big “A” Apostle and Timothy was a little “a” apostle. There were only
13 big “A” apostles - the 12 disciples of Jesus, minus Judas, but then Matthias
was added, and Paul, who was chosen by Jesus on the road to Damascus. These
13 men were given special authority to help build and lead the early church in
a special period. There are no other big “A” apostles today. Timothy was a little
“a” apostle. A little “a” apostle is sent with a message. Paul was chosen by Jesus
and Paul found Timothy and commissioned him as a preacher of the Gospel
also. Timothy was sent out under Paul’s ministry and the authority of Jesus to
preach the Gospel to the churches in Ephesus.
This means that every Christian is a little “a” apostle as well - in Matthew
28:18-20 we have been given a mandate by Jesus to go and make disciples,
by preaching the Gospel. We have been chosen and sent with a message as
ambassadors. 2 Corinthians 5:20 says, “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors,
as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s
behalf: Be reconciled to God! God made him who had no sin to be sin for us,
so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” There is our royal
commissioning as sent ones - we are Christ’s ambassadors! There also is our
message - because God sent Jesus to die for our sin we can be reconciled to
God!
Remember this truth this week - if you belong to Christ, you are His
ambassador, sent to carry His message, the Gospel. As you go throughout your
day and throughout your week, doing your work, keep your eyes and heart open
for opportunities to share the message of the Gospel with those around you!
